A North Carolina police chief has officially barred officers from making up phony 911 calls in order to gain access to private residences without a search warrant.
Several officers with the Durham Police Department lied about 911 hang-up calls to convince residents to consent to searches of their homes, an officer said under oath in late May, a local ABC affiliate reported.
The allegations prompted Police Chief Jose Lopez to send out an internal memo barring the practice. It has recently been brought to my attention that some officers have informed citizens that there has been a 911 hang-up call from their residence in order to obtain consent to enter for the actual purpose of looking for wanted persons on outstanding warrants, he said in the memo, Raw Story reported.
Effective immediately no officer will inform a citizen that there has been any call to the emergency communications center, including a hang-up call, when there in fact has been no such call.

Felony charges if you’re a public servant as it contains elements of official oppression and violation of 4th amendment rights.
I had this happen to me once. It wasn't until just now that I realized it was probably a lie.
FTA:
“Officer A.B. Beck admitted during testimony that he lied in order to gain entry to the defendants home in South-Central Durham and serve an outstanding warrant.
He told a District Court judge that fake emergency scheme was a common practice within Durhams police department an accusation the police chief denies.”

Ahhh, thanks. I misread.
That makes more sense.
“911 - What’s your emergency?”
“Yeah, I’ve got some lying sacks of **** here telling me they’re coming in my house illegaly because they got a 911 call.”
I wonder what the response time to that call would be.
Good thing the chief cleared that up.
“No lying or illegal stuff guys.”
Or confiscate firearms, I'll bet. If not now, then someday soon.
“No lying or illegal stuff guys...
...for the time being” (wink wink)
An interesting development since the Courts have determined that cops can deliberately lie to gather evidence under probable cause.
That would be a perfect subterfuge for a firearms search, wouldn’t it?
What ruling was that from? :-/
Paging Mister Costanza, Mister George Costanza, you have a call waiting on the white courtesy phone in the lobby.
Agreed. With a 5 year minimum prison sentence.
I think law enforcement officials should pay a heavy price when they wantonly violate the public trust and/or abuse their authority.
If you have a land line, it is super easy to make a 911 hangup call from your phone. No need to even be at the house. It will be recorded at the 911 center as a true, verifiable 911 hangup.
Another reason to ditch land lines.
Sorry officer, you are mistaken. There was no 911 call made from this residence.
The same department that shot the unarmed football player who had gotten in a car wreck and was stumbling around due to a head injury.
-they’ve got quite a history.
Police are allowed to lie when not under oath. We have an adversarial justice system and people should know that.
