When a major American city such as Chicago reports 82 people shot and 14 killed over a violent holiday weekend, it's time to take notice.
Describing some parts of the inner city as "the Wild, Wild West" or "an urban war zone" to make a point about lawlessness just doesn't cut it anymore. It's time to call it what it is: an epidemic of gun violence as deadly as any infectious disease or plague that any health professional can imagine.
When Mallory O'Brien, executive director of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, looks at the levels of gun violence in cities such as Chicago, she sees similarities with Milwaukee in terms of the demographics and the social environments where many of the shootings are located.
According to O'Brien, Milwaukee should consider itself fortunate for having "only" nine shootings and one fatality over the Fourth of July weekend, compared to Chicago's bloody totals. But that didn't alleviate her concerns about the possibility for outbreaks of violence on a grand scale in some communities.
"Anytime you hear about that many shootings, it's shocking," O'Brien said. "It's alarming. That's why we have the public health approach."
The homicide commission collects information and research of detailed incidents involving homicide and non-fatal shootings and other crimes on an individual basis. Even though many media reports tended to fold all incidents of gun violence in Chicago's holiday weekend into one large story of societal dysfunction, that tactic often obscured the various factors involved in such widespread mayhem.

How about mandatory 10 years for possession by a prohibited person?
Well, it is (almost) an epidemic, and, as with any epidemic, vector control is key.
Sounds like it is a problem where there is a culture that makes and takes its own law and dispenses its own brand of justice unto itself.
The problem is: when you yourself are engaged in illegal activity, and someone tresspasses on your action, you cannot seek legal remedies for redress.
The comparison to infectious diseases is specious.
Medical conditions due to vitamin deficiency or genetic abnormality can be every bit as fatal as those due to bacterial or viral infection, but because they’re not spread by a foreign agent, combatting them has to be approached in a different fashion.
As others have pointed out above, gun possession is not the cause of gun violence; focusing on the gun rather than the actual cause(s) of a violent culture isn’t just futile, it’s counterproductive because it distracts from actually solving the problem. If a person’s got a vitamin deficiency disease, treatment with agents to counter infections does no good; and the longer that treatment is continued in the absence of any other palliative approach, the longer the real problem is left untreated.
The first thing these folks need to realize is that gun violence is NOT like an infectious disease.
You must first change a mans heart and then his mind will follow. Out of a evil heart comes all kinds of wicked acts.
“widespread mayhem”
Maybe wide spread in democrat infestations.
Need to send in more ammo and tell Reginald Denny to stay the he$$ clear of such environs.
Watch word “urban america”
I'm with you, and the more history I read, the more I know we're right. Brace yourself, hold your nose, and go read some of the posts over at DU. Then try to convince yourself that they won't kill everyone they disagree with the first chance they get.
Since every mass murder in the last two decades was committed by a person with ties or support of liberal causes, it would be more correct to say that liberalism is a crisis in public health.
Thanks for clarifying that it is people and not guns. From the usual news reports, I have constantly feared that my firearms might jump off the wall and start randomly shooting at any time. Whew!
I certainly agree.
“How about mandatory 10 years for possession by a prohibited person?”
That works.
Seems a bit racist to refer to black culture as a public health issue.
Well said

The word is getting out. Homicide is cultural.
“Gun violence” is a propaganda metric. “Hospital Deaths” make as much sense. You can eliminate most “Hospital Deaths” by banning hospitals (no doubt a few underground hospitals will survive) but the overall death rate will go up.
That is a good thought but you cast too wide a net.
There are several subcultures within the Black Community. One is represented by the upstanding black souls on Free Republic.
It is the black urban subculture that has disintegrated into a feral state that is the source of the liberal embarrassment. It is the city liberal slaves that are killing each other.
What doesn't work is gun control and Gun Free Zones. What does work is what Robert A. Heinlein said: “An armed society is a polite society.”
Kane?
Why post this insult to humanity?Don’t you have better things to do!

This is 20 years of appeals. 24 YRS SINCE THE CRIME. TOOK ONLY THE DNA TO PROVE WHO DID IT, #1 SUSPECT. DNA & confession proved he raped, strangled to death with her OWN SHOE LACES 8 year old Ashley 'Nicki' Read and then threw her body in the river. Even helped hunt for what was thought to be a missing child.
From the long article that sites the codes.
At some point while she was being violently raped, Nikki was struck in several parts of her face, and her head was smashed against the door handle. Although it is impossible to know how long Nikki remained conscious during this terrifying ordeal, it is uncontroverted that she was alive and conscious at least through part of the rape, because even though the full weight of the appellant was crushing her and even though she was being manually strangled, the appellant admitted that Nikki struggled to get free with her arms and legs. In fact, the appellant candidly admitted that she struggled to get free for a little while. When the appellant finished his gruesome act, he noticed that she was no longer breathing and had turned blue, a fact he attributed to putting too much pressure on her [neck] where she couldn't breathe.
Milwaukee, with a population of just less than 600,000, is 40 percent African-American and 37 percent white. The 2011 Homicide Review Commission reports there were 86 homicides that year, with 93 percent of the suspects black males. Most "gun homicides" are people with criminal histories shooting other criminals. Most of the rest are criminals shooting regular citizens, or regular citizens shooting criminals in self defense.Overall, the homicide rate was 14.5 per 100,000 residents, and the nonfatal shooting rate was 79.5 per 100,000 residents. However, when broken down by race, the homicide rate per black residents is 27.9 per 100,000 compared to 9.7 per 100,000 Latino residents and 1.7 per 100,000 White residents.
The report concludes that of the 2011 homicide victims, 77 percent (66) had a least one prior arrest and of the known 2011 homicide suspects 90 percent (74) had at least one prior arrest.
Similar trends were found for nonfatal shooting victims and suspects.
