A new warship to be named the USS Detroit will be commissioned in a 2016 ceremony along the Detroit River. The 389-foot long, 7.5-million-pound littoral combat ship, shown here in a June 27 photo, is being built in Marinette, Wis. It will sail after the Detroit ceremony to its home port in San Diego. “Will Liberals be running the USS Detroit? If so, itll be sunk before the ceremony”
Chuckle. It may not make it out of Menominee ...
Christening the ship this fall, when Barbara Levin, the ships sponsor and wife of U.S. Sen. Carl Levin (Rat), breaks a bottle of champagne over the bow to launch the ship into the Menominee River on the border between Wisconsin and Michigans Upper Peninsula.
There will daily gang turf battles and occasional riots aboard
What is a “littoral combat ship”??
I grew up in Detroit. I may have to make the 4 hour trip down there to see this amazing vessel.

If this mighty ship is really made from aluminum I hope the glass in the champagne bottle is thin or Babs might put a hole in it.

Ask batterycommander at reply #29.
Which one? Wolverine? BTW there is a treaty with Canada that keeps most military vessels off of the great lakes. It of course was relaxed during WWI and WWII

Basically a small modular ship. Different modules can be swapped out depending on the mission. At least that’s the theory.
"Why not accept that manufacturing is gone from this country? Why not let the rust and weeds finish what they started? Why not just embrace the era of disposability? And why didn't we buy a warmer coat before we moved here? Through three Detroit winters, weve asked ourselves these questions. And worked not to find our answer, but to build it. Because we don't think American manufacturing ever failed for being too good. Our worst didn't come when we were at our best. It happened when we thought good was good enough. It's a tall order to return to form, but we're up for it. Were starting with the reinvigoration of a storied American brand, and a storied American city. Because we believe in the beauty of industry. The glory of manufacturing. We know theres not just history in Detroit, there is a future. Its why we are here. Making an investment in skill, at scale. Creating a community that will thrive through excellence of craft and pride of work. Where we will reclaim the making of things that are made well. And define American luxury through American quality."
Detroit is now an artist colony and because of the new governor a leader in american manufacturing. Low taxes.

We hope to move there in the next few years.
Me too. Where in Michigan are you now, if you are willing to tell me?
Is it going to be crewed by Somali ragheads?
Suprisingly good value for money. The Brits expect to pay up to 350 million pounds for their Global Combatant Ship.
Yeah, I bet that those sailors just love swapping out their modules.

Yabbut, will they allow crackers in the mess?
I’ll go, if I have the time.

The USN should let it patrol the Great Lakes. One can never discount the possibility of rogue third world pirates roaming the back bays of Lake Huron.
Hardly. I toured the USS Ft Worth a few years back. In order to be a shallow draft, fast moving attack ship they sacrificed armor. Above the water line, it's aluminum. I would NOT want to be aboard when the shtf!
