A new warship to be named the USS Detroit will be commissioned in a 2016 ceremony along the Detroit River. The 389-foot long, 7.5-million-pound littoral combat ship, shown here in a June 27 photo, is being built in Marinette, Wis. It will sail after the Detroit ceremony to its home port in San Diego. Now I've got the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald stuck in my head.
Don't go in November... or other months when Lake Superior is ice covered like May this year.
Not the USS John Kerry?
In 1941, Detroit's home port became Pearl Harbor. She was moored at her base with Raleigh and Utah when the Japanese attacked on 7 December. The other two ships bore the brunt of an attack by six torpedo planes, and despite several strafing passes Detroit, was able to get underway safely and set up an Anti-aircraft fire which accounted for several planes. Only one of the Detroit's crew members were injured during the Japanese attack, Lester Silva, who received a Purple Heart. She was ordered to sail at once to investigate the west coast of Oahu for any indications of a landing by the Japanese, then to join the search for the retiring Japanese force.
And in the true spirit of the city, it’ll catch fire and no one will want to serve on it.
Seems like just a couple weeks ago I saw a pic of some kids playing Foosball on an ice flow in the big lake right here on FR.
It was the Germans right after they hit Pearl harbor :-)
FYI it was 28 subs built at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Comapny in Manitowoc, WI.. link

Battleship??? One 57mm gun??
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This has got to be satire!!! Name it the “Coleman Young” so we all know why it sank.
At least it wasn’t the USS District of Columbia. The cost just to run it would be 21.2 billion an hour.
Lousy design. Made entirely of Aluminum. Lotza docktime for these tubs, mostly to fix major design flaws. They can’t decide the mission for these white elephants. But guess I guess they’ll do ok as Dock Queens.
Will Liberals be running the USS Detroit? If so, it’ll be sunk before the ceremony.
They should have gone with something more upbeat like USS Total Loser...
The Edmund Fitzgerald, the pride of the American fleet..
It looks like a big yacht.
Warship in search of a mission.
The USS Rodman works for me, not to Sully the image of a once proud liberal union enclave that snuggled with the mob and the NBA.
