Two years after activists for same-sex marriage obtained the confidential tax return and donor list of a national group opposed to redefining marriage, the Internal Revenue Service has admitted wrongdoing and agreed to settle the resulting lawsuit.
The Daily Signal has learned that, under a consent judgment today, the IRS agreed to pay $50,000 in damages to the National Organization for Marriage as a result of the unlawful release of the confidential information to a gay rights group, the Human Rights Campaign, that is NOMs chief political rival.
Congress made the disclosure of confidential tax return information a serious matter for a reason, NOM Chairman John D. Eastman told The Daily Signal. Were delighted that the IRS has now been held accountable for the illegal disclosure of our list of major donors from our tax return.
The Daily Signal is seeking comment on the settlement from the IRS and Justice Department.
In his order entered this morning, District Judge James C. Cacheris granted the settlement of NOMs suit against the IRS, which was represented by the Department of Justice.
In February 2012, the Human Rights Campaign posted on its web site NOMs 2008 tax return and the names and contact information of the marriage groups major donors, including soon-to-be Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. That information then was published by the Huffington Post and other liberal-leaning news sites.
HRCs president at the time, Joe Solmonese, was tapped that same month as a national co-chairman of President Barack Obamas re-election campaign.
Eastman said an investigation in the civil lawsuit determined that someone gave NOMs tax return and list of major donors to Boston-based gay rights activist Matthew Meisel. Email correspondence from Meisel revealed that he told a colleague of a conduit to obtain the marriage groups confidential information.

outside settlement stops any discovery
An insult. A slap on the wrist.
The IRS is basically getting away with this. And will continue to do so in the future.
Pennies. It should be $5 million.
We can’t even put a dollar amount on the damage the LGBT movement have done to this country and the IRS settles for $50,000.
Tip o’ the iceberg handled and allows them to cover up the rest.
You're damn right!
Names and prison sentences!
They're still there - they'll do it again when it suits them.
And nobody is going to jail.
We are either a nation of law and equal justice, or...
That’s MY money they are giving away. I’d rather pay their room and board at the graybar hotel.
IRS 50K settlement ping
50 grand? Charlie Rangel wouldn’t even classify that as “chump change”. These people should be getting a “living” settlement not some minimum wage settlement. They “deserve” 50 million!
$50,000?
Can they afford that.
Really, they should be held liable for any adverse actions that resulted from their little “mistake”.
$50G ain’t gonna cut it.
People have been threatened their livelyhood targeted.
Keep writing checks .....
1st thing, take that 50K and apply irs penalty/interest/fines to it like they do to us.
2nd thing, multiply that number by 50,000.
3rd thing, pay that amount.
4th thing, DISBAND THE irs AND JAIL ALL irs employees.
They don’t care how much it is. It’s not THEIR Money.
They won’t care till someone ends up in Leavenworth...
Obama said not a smidgen of wrong doing in the IRS which means he approves of this. Corrupt b’stard out to be jailed.
Oh and this shows how corrupt the gay mafia are that they took this info instead of going to the FBI to report a crime.
Some people can get other people’s tax returns for a perverted cause just for the asking, but Congress can’t get IRS emails with a subpoena.
Now, go after so called “Human Rights Campaign”.
There were in unlawful possession of a tax return and unlawfully published the names on the tax return for the sole purpose of jeopardizing everyone on it.
“We cant even put a dollar amount on the damage the LGBT movement have done to this country and the IRS settles for $50,000.”
What do they care? $50.000’ $50,00,000? It’s our money
.... Ya ... unfortunately this looks like it could have been part of a Whole! The IRS is in fear of any information that may be garnered during any Discovery phase. This may have been an important case that is connected to the whole IRS targeting scandal.
