Coffee Is About To Get More Expensive Everywhere

DANIELLE WIENER-BRONNER, The Wire
Jun. 20, 2014

Months after we all started fretting over the prospect of a global coffee shortage, it seems we might actually start to feel the caffeine-related effects of Brazil's massive drought and Central America's coffee fungus, in the form industry-wide retail price increases.

The Washington Post reported back in February that coffee costs were expected to rise later in the year:

For now, retail prices for coffee are stable. Roasters typically have enough supplies to cover themselves for a few months. But if the price of the Arabica (pronounced uh-RAB-ick-uh) beans continues to rise, consumers could start seeing the cost of their morning coffee creep up later this year.

And that's exactly what appears to be happening. Starbucks said today that consumers at more than 7,100 stores in the U.S. should expect prices on some drinks to jump by 5 to 20 cents each.

Some brands will just add in more of the cheaper, more plentiful (but less tasty) robusta beans.

You mean Starbuck’s overpriced prices are going to be overpriced? Sucks for the economy but coffee is a filthy beverage as anyone who has ever had to clean a break room can attest.

Notice that they announced their price increase at Starbucks on “News Dump Friday”.....

Food prices are rising at double digit rates. I watched the bologna I buy go from 4.98 to 5.63 the other week, a 13 percent jump in price.

Its been going on for years now.

I heard about a 15 percent food inflation rate in Australia when I listened to a local news broadcast a few years back and the BBC has since published on its website a story about a 15 percent food price inflation rate worldwide.

I drink the Newmans Own k-cups for the keurig and I swear they changed it to the point it tastes like dishwater now.

Keurig machines have taken care a LOT of that, though the servings are quite expensive.

Just heard on the business news on Thursday morning that the drought wasn’t that severe, and coffee prices should be coming down. Maybe Schulz at Starbuck’s is just paying for that college program for his employees.

This is at the end of march. I've since read that the year to date rate is 22%. Food prices always climb when Commies are in charge.

About two years ago was the last time I saw Maxwell House for $5 a can. I had bought 6 or 8 cans to add to my stash and I haven't bought coffee for that two years.

My stash is down to about 4 or 5 cans now and I've been waiting for the price to dive again .... guess it won't happen.

I've got about 40 lbs of unsalted butter I got at $1.60 or so about a year and a half ago ... some grocery couldn't sell the un-salted butter so they slashed the price and I haven't bought butter in all that time.

I've been doing this for years.

Glad I can’t stand coffee, never could. Love the aroma though.

I know that everyone is buying and using the keurig but I have never had a cup of coffee from one that really tasted like coffee. Mr. M and I use a french press and grind our own. We just bought our son (Mr. Coffee Snob) a roaster so he can roast his own. I don’t own one because I don’t even know where to buy unfrosted coffee. Mr. Mercat, Jr. says that the key is finding beans that have been roasted in the past week. Any older and they start to lose their flavor. I can’t really tell the diff but it makes him happy.
