I'd almost be sure that the American Indian plaintiffs in this administrative case had their legal costs paid for by the Obama Administration. That's because it's obvious that Washington Democrats have been leaning on the team for quite some time to change their name as a blatant attempt to make political hay out of a non-issue.
Unfortunately, I foresee a gutless leftist named Roger Goodell (aka the NFL commissar) eventually getting other NFL owners to twist Redskins' owner Dan Snyder's arm painfully enough to get him to relent and agree to a name change. They'll try to do pretty much what the NBA commissar and owners are doing to Donald Sterling. If Snyder doesn't relent, they'll try to force him to sell the team. That's just the way crony capitalism works.
Goodell is the worst commissioner ever. Somewhere, Pete Rozelle is shaking his head in disbelief at what has happened to the league that he built into a sports and economic powerhouse. They are squandering everything at the altar of political correctness and the fear of being forever paralyzed by relentless trial lawyers.
yes, agreed
This is a rouge administration flaunting their power. This can only happen with a feckless congress.
The Redskins went to court and the decision was reversed in short order.
It will be again.
Bread and circuses. Distraction, misdirection...
A non-issue to consume bandwidth and airtime.
Laughable.
Except that it isn't any type of function of capitalism. It is rather a crude attempt at the coercion of uniformity in the area of social values. It is cut from the same cloth as Bolshevik uniformity under the sociopathic regime of Lenin & Trotsky; or as slightly modified, while preserving the facade of private enterprise under Hitler & the Brownshirts in Nazi Germany.
The American Left is determined to intimidate any & all of us into accepting the pretense that people are interchangeable. Hence any notice of human differences calls for an ever more obsessive denial & ever more extreme sanctions.
To really appreciate the intellectual absurdity of this process, consider Footnote On Egalitarian Compulsion.
Among the rational, it should be obvious that what is insulting to American Indian tribes, is not someone recognizing their ethnicity, but the antics of Leftist crackpots, who believe that that recognition is insulting. People proud of their heritage are not insulted by references to it, even over trivial aspects; and honoring that trivial aspect (skin pigment) by making it the symbol of a hopefully competitive sports franchise, is hardly an insult among the rational.

It’s all aside from the point. People have a constitutional right to use disparaging trademarks. A team ought to be allowed to call themselves Big Lipped Spear Chuckers, Drunken Micks or Greedy Jooos! if it wants, and leave it up to the fans if they want to pay for tickets to their games, and the media if they want to air them.
