The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football teams name disparaging to Native Americans.
The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans. It was the second time such a case was filed.

Our local HS is the Choctaw ‘Big Green’ Indians......................
If I owned the team I would change the name to the Washington Tarr and Feathers.
Sorry, that is not PC. The name 's gotta go.
BTW, I forgot to mention, I was born and raised in Grand Forks, ND. The local high school, the Grand Forks Central Redskins, bowed to PC years ago, and changed their name to the Knights. The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, also in Grand Forks, was forced to bow to PC, and give up the name. So far, they have not chosen a new one. I hope they never do, just to piss them off.
And I am a Vikings fan, though that is an exercise in futility. I agree, however. Being as the Vikings were a bunch of blood thirsty maniacs, something should be done about it. I just wish the Minnesota Vikings were as fierce at playing football, as the old Vikings were at doing bad things.
I'd almost be sure that the American Indian plaintiffs in this administrative case had their legal costs paid for by the Obama Administration. That's because it's obvious that Washington Democrats have been leaning on the team for quite some time to change their name as a blatant attempt to make political hay out of a non-issue.
Unfortunately, I foresee a gutless leftist named Roger Goodell (aka the NFL commissar) eventually getting other NFL owners to twist Redskins' owner Dan Snyder's arm painfully enough to get him to relent and agree to a name change. They'll try to do pretty much what the NBA commissar and owners are doing to Donald Sterling. If Snyder doesn't relent, they'll try to force him to sell the team. That's just the way crony capitalism works.
Goodell is the worst commissioner ever. Somewhere, Pete Rozelle is shaking his head in disbelief at what has happened to the league that he built into a sports and economic powerhouse. They are squandering everything at the altar of political correctness and the fear of being forever paralyzed by relentless trial lawyers.
That’s a fairly low threshold. Just 5 offended and you can break a trademark. I’m printing shirts now.
I think we have a very good shot at ending the IRS and replacing it with a national sales tax.
yes, agreed
What’s the big deal?
Just change the name to something non-offensive like the Washington “TeaBaggers!”
I get that, but I think it’s benefits outweigh that. What’s the alternative, practically?
In theory I support a consumption tax, but I don’t trust the politicians when it comes to crafting it, or the bureaucrats when it comes to enforcing it. To me, the best alternative in a bad bunch of choices would be a flat income tax, no exemptions, no deductions, no credits, no exceptions.
This is a rouge administration flaunting their power. This can only happen with a feckless congress.
The Redskins went to court and the decision was reversed in short order.
It will be again.
It will be again.
Only problem with that thinking is that the composition of the federal judiciary as a whole has moved to the left since then, with the appointments of Obama, Clinton, and even W to some extent. So no one can be sure on the ultimate decision. Though everyone talks about SCOTUS decisions, the large majority of federal cases never get to the SCOTUS. They are decided in District Court, with appeals going to Circuit Court. (In this case it'll probably be the District Court for The District of Columbia with appeals going to the DC Circuit Court.)
That's the way it was in 1999. And the way it will be again this time.
I understand what your concern is. But the problem for any liberal judge, though, is that the charges are virtually identical to what they were in 1999 -- to the word.
If nothing has changed, how can you justify a different decision?
Bread and circuses. Distraction, misdirection...
A non-issue to consume bandwidth and airtime.
Laughable.
