White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday that President BarackObama is always looking for opportunities to act unilaterally again on guns, though he would prefer to work with Congress.
The presidents goal is to look for opportunities to act administratively, unilaterally using his executive authority to try to make our communities safer, Earnest said, responding to a question the day that a gunman opened fire at an Oregon high school, killing one student and injuring a teacher. Were always looking for those opportunities. But none of those opportunities when they present themselves is going to be an acceptable substitute for robust legislative action.
Police said the shooter at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon, was later found dead.
After the December 2012 massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, Obama took 23 executive actions to restrict guns. However, an Obama-backed bill for stronger background checks for gun purchases could not even get enough support to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Theres no doubt there has been an alarming frequency of tragic incidents of gun violence that are concerning to Democrats and Republicans in Washington but more importantly to people all across the country, Earnest said. The question is what can we do to make certain something like this never ever happens again? There are going to be other tragedies. The question I think really facing lawmakers right now is what common sense steps can Democrats and Republicans take to reduce the likelihood of gun violence.
And there are some, and they have unfortunately been bottled up in Congress and that is a disappointment to the president, Earnest continued. But thats not going to stop the president from continuing to push for administrative steps that we can take to help reduce gun violence.
Speak for yourself. You can come out from under the desk when we're done.
Stop your whining. You have seen nothing yet. In a country with a hundred million gun owners, the daily death toll could be too high to even count. Be thankful 99.999999 % of us have kept our powder dry.
they have an army. railguns, tanks, tear gas, water cannons, airplanes, drones, lasers, and a bureaucracy of a 1000 paper cuts.
I know people around here will flame you for that post. However, they are in denial. You are not.
LOL
Not buying it.
He doesn’t have the guts for it
On the off chance that he does something, my bet it will be symbolic rather than anything with teeth in it
already conducting a war on ammo
Here’s a fact: He’s going to get away with this, just like he’s gotten away with everything else. Don’t doubt it for a minute!
He seems determined to keep undercutting his party for 2014.
Speak for yourself. You can come out from under the desk when we're done.
In case you hadn't noticed, all the things Diogenesis said have already happened. I must have missed the revolt.
After this Bergdahl distraction it seems to me that even if Dear Leader had the terrorists he released to dinner at the White House and invited the alphabetmedia to film them (I can’t say it) doing something horrible and gruesome in the Lincoln bedroom... even then everyone will still be waiting for someone else to act first. Perhaps you are right even then nothing would happen. I wonder if there is a way we can lock in a stop order before the next affront to our collective sensibilities is blazing across the sky?
You nailed it.
There will be unilateral reaction that might be very troubling to folks unable to safely leave the White House
I have a news flash for you. Thinking about taking everyone’s guns and taking everyone’s guns is a whole different set of variables.
What you have in the White hut is a little muzzie commie thug wannabe from Hawaii. Hawaii not really even being America. He has no clue of the real life red blooded American men and women who he will be trying to take guns from. He is in for the surprise of his miserable life.
Yes. I wonder how many people will be killed in Chicago in just the same 24 hour period as this killing in Oregon?
Bro, there are more guns in private ownership in Pennsylvania than all of the federal government.
If he moves against gun ownership he nullifies his authority of federal diktat.
He is an absolutely meaningless pest upon the republic and the people.
Yeah and he might unilaterally get his ass thrown out of our house......
I don’t figure he will be surprised. My husband works in a business that makes equipment for law enforcement. He has never been this busy. They have been overtime for several years now. Police and the Government are arming up big time. It scares him and the people who work there.
They know this is unlike what they have ever seen in many years.
