A new study by researchers at Stanford University is suggesting that making soda and other sugary drinks ineligible for purchase with SNAP funds could result in nearly a quarter million fewer diabetes cases in adults, and over 140,000 fewer obese children.

Food stamps should be used for meat, fish, veggies, fruit and dairy products. Period. Actual products of our farms, ranches and fisheries. Not for packaged products.
That would improve recipients’ health and lower healthcare costs immeasurably. Hundreds of billions of bucks, I’ll bet.
I taught healthcare classes for people with chronic conditions in my city. It was just amazing how few people had a clue that their food choices influenced their health.
I beg to differ, they are spending tax payers money. The tax payer definitely should have a say in how it is spent.
I think EBT should only pay for white bread, bologna and skim milk. It would prevent starvation and limit time spent on the dole.
EBT folks ain’t gonna cook.
That’s a given.
If the grub they can buy is only stuff to cook, they’ll trade the chits for booze and cigs even more than they do now.
Ban Soda ?!?
They can’t ban lottery tickets, cigarettes, alcohol, or even illegal drugs. The purchases are just washed through a black market for cash.
I would ban a lot of things from foot stamps being they are on the tax dollar. I would also require receipts to be turned in for the next months food stamps to prove they did not sell the last month’s stamps.
Study: Banning Soda From Food Stamp Purchases Could Curb Obesity and Diabetes Rates
There’s that “COULD” again ,meaning no chance in hell will it make any difference
Based on what I’ve read, there are a lot of places where folks use EBT to buy food in non-perishable containers (jars, cans, etc) and then trade the stuff back to the store for cash at 50 to 60% of purchase price.
This is not a nanny state issue - if you take the handouts, you have to abide by the rules ............
I have no problem with this.
You have a point.
I have nothing packaged in my kitchen. If I want to eat something, I have to cook. Have it down to a science, can make fabulous dinner in 15 minutes.
Another Freeper and I decided to see if we could eat well for a week on $30. She bought some packaged soups and a few other things, I did everything from scratch. Both of us succeeded quite well in having delicious, nutritious meals. We started it to show that foodstamp recipients who whine about the amount they receive are wrong. And stupid.
MFgers of packaged foods flood TV and every other form of advertising with messages about their "nutritious" crap. Thinking of Honey Bunches of Oats that contains a horrendous amount of sugar. Kids are getting these messages night and day. The population is definitely NOT headed toward health.
But not to worry, BigPharma will load them up with incredibly expensive drugs when they inevitably get sick. And our tax bucks will pay for that too. A neighbor of mine gets more than $6,000 worth of prescriptions a month, paid for by Medicare. Her cabinets are FULL of packaged foods.
Very interesting experiment.
Wouldn’t you love to see that appear on MSM news?
Unfortunately the kind of homemaking skills most needed by poor people are no longer taught either by their parents (if they have any in the household) or public schools.
They also need to ban shrimp, crab and lobster from being bought with Food stamps. My sis works at a grocery store and she says the food stamp people are always buying those, and most people can’t afford to have those very often.
Good one. Thats the problem exactly.
I know a women who was on food stamps for a time and had a young son then. She would buy frozen food on sale and found she had so much that she bought a freezer. Social services after a visit started to investigate her as a hoarder. She wasn’t blowing the EBT money fast enough, living on honey roasted peanuts (expensive junk food) or selling EBT credit for cash. She was an outlier...they were very suspicious.
But most soda doesn't have sugar - it has HFCS - and that is at the heart of all the obesity" issues :-)
Every doctor and every nutritionist I’ve ever talked to said “You can’t eat your way to diabetes.” I always ask “Then why can’t I eat sugar?”
Noticed it says “cards”
Why more than one?
Multiple identities quite possibly.
” it has HFCS - and that is at the heart of all the obesity” issues :-)”

Thanks,Gabz.
Not being a soda drinker I did not know that.
Black coffee all the way, iced and hot.
.
What about rice? How about flour, pasta? How about no pre-prepared frozen meals?
My point being if they want lasagna - they have to learn to make it- no Stouffers.
One thing that social service agencies should emphasize is that herb and vegetable plants and seeds can be purchased with food stamps.
“.the left wing lunatics have prevented to town from cutting down the trees around the reservoir so instead we got critical notices from the towns department of health suggesting we boil the water that comes out of the tap before drinking it...”

My God,that makes no sense at all-—unless you are heavily invested in Poland Springs and the like.
I’ve always had great water-——lucky I guess.
.
I don’t see this as a nanny state issue, it’s common sense to save taxpayer dollars. Now lets move on to chips, snacks and other minimum nutrition items.
