Barbour: McDaniel will cut federal education funding

Establishment Republicans backing Sen. Thad Cochran have launched a campaign to brand GOP challenger Chris McDaniel a candidate who would deeply cut federal education dollars on which Mississippi schools rely. The six-term senator, they said, would protect money for students and teachers.

Former Gov. Haley Barbour offered a preview for what his pro-Cochran super PAC and its allies had planned for the weeks before McDaniel and Cochran face off in a June 24 runoff for the GOP nomination for the Senate. That contest reflects the philosophical split between the establishment-minded Republicans and the new-to-politics tea party outsiders who relish upending longtime political figures.

A McDaniel spokesman said Barbour was “spouting Democratic scare tactics about the dangers of fiscal responsibility.”

Democrats, meanwhile, were preparing for the prospect that their nominee, former Rep. Travis Childers, could face not the genteel, entrenched Cochran but McDaniel, a state senator and former talk show host with hours of audio, some provocative, in the public realm.

No one predicts Democrats have a realistic shot at winning the seat in a state that last elected a Democratic senator in 1982. But the failure of either Republican to win the nomination in Tuesday’s primary re-set the race for the runoff.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Barbour said voters soon would be hearing plenty about McDaniel’s opposition to the Education Department and the roughly $800 million the state receives for students from kindergarten through high school.

“Not 1 percent of Mississippi voters know he says that,” Barbour said.

That was likely to change.

McDaniel, elected to the state Senate in 2007, has said the federal government should have no role in education, not even in helping pay for it.

These people live off the government teat. So they want men like Cochran that will "bring home the bacon" i.e. graft payoffs.

Our side needs to start a #WhereIsCochran campaign online and maybe some yardsigns and bumper stickers.

It’s a joke that Mississippi would choose to send an invalid back to the Senate.

Haley should know that one senator does not change law! But then again maybe he doesn’t. He has nursed for so long at the public teat that he has lost sight of reality!

I had to read it twice to get that he thought it was bad to cut the Department of Education.. I would take that as a plus, and make me want to clone this guy.. but thats just me.. :)

Cochran is just Barbour's sock puppet. Cochran is more mentally out of it than Frank Lautenberg - and I mean Lautenberg in his present condition. Barbour is the one controlling what Cochran's staff feed him. Barbour is trying to have the power of being a Senator without actually having to put himself before the electorate.

‘Haley the Doosh’.

I used to think quite highly of him but I’ve ‘grown’.

>> Because he lacks the physical stamina...

Regardless of which lack is more important, and I don’t think we can onfidently determine, it’s abundantly clear that Sen. Cochran lacks the “overall” stamina for another 6-year term. In fact, he has barely lifted a finger in the current campaign. I believe his coming defeat will be due more to that factor than to the efforts of self-styled, out-of-state Tea Party groups. A really vigorous campaign — like those run by Linda Graham in SC and by Mitchmac in KY — would probably have buried an unknown novice like Sen. McDaniel.

Because Gov. Barbour surely has been aware of Cochran’s stamina problem all along, his plan seems to have been that Thad would serve a year or two, then resign so Gov. Bryant could appoint either Haley or Haley’s nephew to finish out Cochran’s term. I’ll bet Haley now wishes he had let Thad retire gracefully — at which point Haley himself might even have been the favored candidate in this year’s election!

I have NO idea why education is a federal matter? Taxing people in California to give to North Dakota makes no sense. Taxing ND to give to Florida is goofy. Taxing Florida to give to Oregon is insane.

Education is a local matter.

So McDaniels needs to come back and say he'd only eliminate federal funds which are used to impose the federal curriculum on Mississippi and local communities. Tell the people it's about regaining control of the schools, and money will be redirected to programs that will help children prepare for jobs and being excellent community members.

(That's what 'pubs used to argue until George 1 came along and expanded the Department of Education)

Cochran isn’t running. Boss Hogg is doing Cochran’s campaigning
for him. Cochran is just a prop for Haley Barbour.
