HATTIESBURG, Mississippi With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment.
"Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious, McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt.
With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up nearly 3,000 votes at 49.6 percent to Cochran's 48.8 percent, according to the Associated Press.
The likely runoff follows an all-night nail-biter between Cochran and McDaniel that saw each candidate see-saw between winner and loser. McDaniel supporters at an event here were ecstatic, cheering loudly at the television whenever new results come in while a country rock band and bagpipe band take turns entertaining the crowd.

Her come the lost ballot boxes, the demonRATS aren't the only ones that know how to play that sordid game.
This is a loss, a big loss, for Cochrane. He was the big money, insider crony and, despite tossing in the kitchen sink, he couldn’t pull out a win. McDaniel will be the next Senator from MS.
You’re right and the price of pork just went up.
Ah. I see my question re: open primaries was answered — I should read the whole thread before asking... *aw-shucks*

The Tea Party movement is STILL ALIVE and ACTIVE!
A whole lot of vested interests are shaking in their boots at the thought of the man who is their meal ticket and connection to the power base , Thad Cochran, going down for the count.
Hey! Where are all the posters who yesterday said that Cochran would easily win?
Notice how all these old geezers in DC cling to their seats in DC until they leave in the stiff, horizontal position. The country club perks must be outstanding. Its way past due that we (their employers) send them away to their retirements already. The Senate especially is only a few steps away from becoming a senior hospice center for the infirmed and mentally disturbed. We TP’ers employ the ‘Out with the old and in with the bold’ method of ‘fundamental transformation’.
Congratulations to all you Mississippians. This is a big accomplishment.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Congresscritters who get voted out of office just go up to K street and become high-paid lobbyists. They show up back in the halls of the Capitol building, peddling their influence. It's a virulently malignant system.
Unless I miss my guess this isn’t over. According to the Clarion-Ledger’s website, 9 precincts have not reported. I wonder why not. And do they have enough McDaniel votes to push him over 50%. Or, seeing that all but two are precincts in the Jackson area, are they trying to conjure up enough Cochran votes to put him over.

I dont believe Senator Cochran is obamas boy, I believe hes Haley Barbours boy.
Same diff.
Bump!
What are the parameters for a recount?
Now is the time to pray that once McDaniels wins, he doesn’t get sucked into the big government establishment insider mold. If he stays sharp like Cruz then we still have a fire going here.
So who are the Carey voters going to gravitate to? McDaniel or Cochran?
Congratulations to the people of Mississipii who have expressed their wishes for more honest, accountable government. Cochran was not the man and not the politician that Mississippi thought he was and many people on this forum and conservative media worked hard to inform the voters.
They have said no to pay for play politics, they have said no to pork for the selected elites, and they have said no to those who claim to be conservative, but who support the left whenever the price is right.
I would think that Cochran has an uphill climb if he is to prevail in the runoff.
Way to go Mississippi! Hopefully Chris McDaniel will win the runoff, if it comes to that.....still a victory and a strong message to the establishment either way!
