NRA: Texas open carry rallies ‘downright weird’ and ‘scary’
Houston Chronicle ^ | 5/2/14 | Lauren McGaughy

Starbucks, Chipotle, Sonic and other food and drink chains have an unexpected new ally in their recent decisions to discourage the carrying of firearms in their establishments: the NRA.

On Friday, the NRA weighed in on a spate of recent open carry rallies across Texas, calling them “scary” and “shows a lack of consideration and manners” out of character in the Lone Star State.

The problem with “low key” is that the definition of what is low key keeps moving leftward. In my father’s day, for example, high schoolers in hunting areas brought their hunting rifles to school for some after-school hunting. The participants in those demonstrations are acting peacefully, often taking literature with them to support their position. Nervousness and running away from the critics is not going to win it for us.

Open carry demonstrations are designed to “scare the straights” anyone who says different is lying to you.
It worked in CA. The gov was saying “since you can carry open, not giving you concealed permits doesn’t violate your right to bear arms”. People started carrying open like the gov said and made the tyrants mad enough to ban the practice. Now they’ve go legal standing to try to get “shall issue” concealed permits.
If the guys in TX are trying to get open carry of long guns banned they are doing fine. Maybe they think they can get open carry of pistols or constitutional concealed carry or something.
The NRA didn’t mention any of this. I read their release, it sounded like it came straight from Bloomberg. I have been an NRA member off and on all my adult life. I’ve always given them the benefit of the doubt, but now I am officially done defending them.

Not everyone can CC. In most states you have to be 21 to get a CC permit, but you can open carry at 18.

No permits are required to open carry in Michigan, long guns or handguns.

Protests and marches are DESIGNED to be in view. They are provocative for the very reason that they are designed to provoke the sheeple into questioning their current understanding and assumptions. It is only then can new information and education break through the person’s defenses.

I understand that such provocative actions are not everyone’s cup of tea. But in my opinion, they do serve a valuable purpose.

It’s hard to be a successful activist by concealing your actions.

Sheesh. What is with all the second amendment hate here?
I carry open on occasion and concealed all the time. I like to have options. It is rallies like this that are making it safe to carry concealed. How you ask? Because in places where no one ever sees a gun they freak out if you accidentally show your concealed carry piece. Accidents can happen it is not cool to have the cops storm in and gun you down. In places with open carry people are use to seeing ordinary citizens with guns. I see them all the time around here and I find it comforting. Not everyone wants to ask for permission to exercise a right. And don’t give me any of that blah blah concealed is better. Sure it is... so is walking around in body armor but not every ‘better’ option is always practical. I like having options and I am sick and tired of so-called allies telling me which options I should and shouldn’t use. Yall and the ATF and all the other haters can buzz off.

Open-carrying a long gun in a civilian eatery or shopping plaza is the equivalent of People of Walmart, or sloppy dressers on airplanes (i.e. hairy back&arm guy in a tank top).

Just because you can, doesn't mean you shouldn't exercise better judgment and NOT.

This is more like Rosa Parks sitting in the front of the bus (if done with quiet, peaceful dignity).

Lots of good reasons to wear that yellow star on your sleeve, too. The cops treat you better.

Bingo! I have had long time friends be VERY surprised to find out I had a gun on me every time they saw me. That was almost a missed opportunity to educate someone. The more people we get educated the more allies we have. People that think ANY gun carry is dangerous are less nervous if they know how many people carry around them every day and never have a problem. My friend, after she got over her initial surprise, actually felt safer around us than she had before she knew.

That is right... because it is safer and less disruptive to sit in the back... the seats are just as good.

I am also not a law breaker. Ergo, I carry open.

In Texas, unless it is a long gun (rifle, shotgun) open carry is breaking the law.

30 years ago kids carried rifles to school on schoolbuses to go to the shooting club. Ignorant people lost us that right. The people need education. Concealment is not education. Did you know that open carry rallies in WI won them the right to carry concealed? They were the second to last state to win back that right.

“I have actually been wondering if what these aren’t secretly leftist groups attempting to undermine all our progress.”

That makes sense——like the people who make up fake racism incidents to make themselves look good in their anti-racism rants.

Not an opponent at all. Just asking for some tact and restraint. I helped get the CCL referendum on the ballot in my county and have had mine for three months now. A few weeks ago I was eating with some people and a woman said that she had heard that it was now legal to carry a gun and that scared her. I politely told her what the licensing and regulations were like and that I was licensed to carry. We had a nice chat around the table and I came away with several converts. I'll bet I did gun owners more good than some yahoos waving rifles around.

Amen. it’s also nice for someone to have the option of open carrying (maybe when carry a wad to the bank) when they don;t have the months to get a carry permit. Or don’t want to worry about getting in trouble on their permit for accidentally revealing their pistol.

The secondary purpose of this is to work for legalizing open carry (in TX, where this occurred). Simply showing that no harm comes from open carry of rifles shows that none will come from allowing pistol carry.

The primary thing is that of restoring the gun culture, and countering the demonization of guns and gun owners. Like gays have won their battle by making their culture in the mainstream instead of hidden, gun owners need to make their interests main stream.

Even with advances in defensive carry rights nationwide in the last generation, the gun culture is at risk of dying. there’s no reason it shouldn’t be “normal” to have a pistol or rifle in public. When it is, then we will have won, and the false fears of the left will have lost all credibility.

it’s sad when a right brings out the exhibitionists amongst us.

Often true, but only for selfishly protecting oneself. For changing hearts and minds, open carry is the way to go.

A civic leader who concealed carries to his Chamber of Commerce meeting every week does nothing for the cause. One who carries openly can make a big difference.

What you say may be true, but it shouldn’t be true.

You must admit that sloppy dressing becomes more common as the “trailblazers” lead the way.

But sloppiness is generally a bad thing, while gun carrying and social acceptance is a good things.

So it’s equivalent only in that both are effective, not that they’re both bad or unpleasant in the long run.

Remember that a black sitting quietly at a lunch counter, or holding hands with a white lady on the sidewalk was “in your face.” SO let’s not let that be our yardstick for what is right or admirable activism.
