I despise that old fossil, Chester Lott.

I doubt that I’m alone.

Thanks very much for the ping.

And that is why MS would have voted him out if he had not resigned.

His involvement in the Cochran campaign will only remind Mississippians
of very bad memories of him. Which cannot be good for Cochran.

He has helped to make sure the we got Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee by splitting conservative votes...

I believe you have him confused with that Progressive darling - Noot "Three hundred pages of this ObamaCare bill are pretty good" Gingrich.

I supported Santorum in 2012. No regrets. He’s still the gold standard for social conservatives.

“SANTORUM: zzzzz”

You’re forgetting that Santorum won the Mississippi presidential primary in 2012 despite getting outspent by Romney by a gazillion to one and despite Newt getting quite a bit of the conservative vote. Santorum knows how to relate to working-class conservatives better than almost any Republican, and there are a lot of those folks in the Mississippi Republican electorate.

“He has helped to make sure the we got Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee by splitting conservative votes...”

Ridiculous. Santorum was far and away the only conservative challenging Romney for the nomination. Newt (who isn’t even that conservative anymore) won what, one state? If anything, Newt kept Santorum from beating Romney in a few winner-takes-all states.

“what conservative *wouldn’t* support McDaniel?”

No idea. Supporting McDaniel over Cochran should be a no-brainer. McDaniel is a proven conservative, with a terrific voting record in the MS legislature, while Cochran is a proven porker with a voting record far too moderate for a state like Mississippi. And while the Democrats will nominate a credible candidate in former Congressman Travis Childers, McDaniel will win the general election handily (it’s Mississippi; black turnout will be low because there aren’t any other statewide races, much less one with Obama on the ballot; it’s looking like a really good GOP year; and McDaniel is an experienced and qualified candidate).

If Santorum connects on economic issues, then the voter is ignorant.

You’re delusional. The race was Romney v Newt. After Romney won florida, it was over. Santorum’s wins were all after the race was over.

Santorum has also stuck with the establishment (on numerous issues) despite the Tea Party too…...

Haley Barbour dismissed the outside of state endorsements of McDaniel as outsiders who don’t know jack about MS.

Yet, Haley Barbour’s brother endorsed McDaniel. Perhaps, Haley doesn’t know jack about his family.

U right, I meant Except for Iowa…which has never produced a GOP nominee that won the office….so it’s really a teeny tiny odd ball weird caucus universe….he only got 30 thousand votes there, and “won” by 8. There’s 30% in Iowa who will vote for the candidate who stresses only social issues period. Iths the same vote Huckabee got in 08. I mean almost exactly. In 16, they will split this vote and neither will gain traction.

And after Iowa.then the race became Mitt V Newt - which was ended in Florida. After that, it was done.

Santorum won Iowa, the very first race. The race was nowhere near over after Florida - nowhere near the total needed delegates. It was a big win, certainly.

Never? Our most recent Republican President did, George W. Bush

….he only got 30 thousand votes there, and “won” by 8

not that this makes it a landslide but it was 34 actually.

I don’t know that Newt had a chance or not, but Newt was the only one who could move mass public opinion with talent and persuasion. What I do know as well, is that it was never going to be Santorum. After Florida, it was over….

The race was over after Florida……in that it was a fait accompli.
