It’s the kind of conservative media story only conservatives understand.
The latest numbers are out for Michael Savage’s radio show. Recall that Savage was a key player in the battle between Sean Hannity and Cumulus radio. A battle that had an exasperated Hannity finally firing Cumulus, as reported here in NewsBusters at the time. But not before Savage, whom Cumulus had in the wings to replace Hannity in the latter’s Cumulus slots, took shots at Hannity, gloating at taking Hannity’s slot.
The Savage numbers tell a revealing tale of conservatism in the media. So let’s start with the brand new numbers themselves, numbers supplied by Nielsen Audio. They are the numbers for April – last month -, and cover 52 of America’s major radio markets. We will directly compare them here with Sean Hannity’s last numbers before being replaced on Cumulus stations - which is to say Hannity’s numbers for December, 2013. The percentages cited – again, these are from Nielsen Audio (formerly known as Arbitron) – are nothing if not startling.

Savage is unpredictable, an enigma. As others have said, he is all over the place.
For breaking news, I'd choose Hannity. But for political commentary and overall entertainment, it's Savage hands down.
This is kind of an interesting phenom, and I suspected it would occur, but I didn’t think it would get this dramatic. I like Savage sometimes, but a steady diet...no. He *is* a crank. He’s rarely charming and funny but overly self-indulgent IMO. I get tired of Hannity a lot, but I appreciate his energy and the fact that he can repeat things ad infinitum. Not that I find that entertaining, but it’s IMO an important thing to develop conservative bumper stickerisms. I seriously dislike Hannity’s obsequiousness towards Rove and some other RINOs. Bottom line, for me, I don’t make it any kind of a point to listen to Sean as I do with Rush or Levin.
I didn’t think Savage would have anything near the general appeal of Hannity, with all his (to me) faults. I’m happier that there *is* a Sean Hannity than there isn’t, even if he isn’t my preference per se. Savage has some audience contempt issues that to me have got to turn off many listeners.
Remember when Palin said she’d baptise terorists with waterboarding...and some splinter of the very religious took offense to her use of the term “baptisim”. Levin defended her. And then one columnist of zero import took Sarah/Levin to task for blasphemy. Under those articles, I saw lots of folks who (via comment) took offense to Levin’s tone, his passion. Well, suffice it to say, I like his passion and yes, even yelling. Those are the people I have learned from, not the milquetoasts.

Medved’s “minute of hate” against conservatives, gets longer every year, conservatives seem to be the only group of people who don’t fit into to his polite, tolerant show, for them his venom oozes out.
Dupree used to appear on the Neal Boortz radio show. Boortz retired a couple of years ago, and I guess Dupree moved over to Hannity’s show. I know Boortz and Hannity are good friends.

I agree with you, I don't like Dupree either. He makes excuses for liberal misdeeds by always trying to say the Repubs do it too. (Maybe they do, but not as bad, and two wrongs don't make a right anyway!)
Hannity's banter with his crew is excruciatingly bad radio. I first heard that format from Glenn Beck and his crew. I don't like it there either (forced jokes, obvious comments, etc.) but at least with Beck it's not unlistenable like with Hannity.
Rush does talk radio the best. He has writers who prepare a "stack of stuff" for him every day, he's well prepared, and he gives out interesting info.
Medved can be infuriating, but sometimes he’s quite entertaining. I like his conspiracy shows, when callers call up with their conspiracy theories, and he debunks them.
Dupree brings nothing to the show. Wish Sean would get a conservative DC *reporter* and have maybe one crew member/sidekick. He should hire Rose (?) (his sometime’s sub). They’d make a good team.
Savage has issues, yes. But to say that Hannity isn’t a whiny, sniveling little puss is funny.
Well how long can you listen to hannity ask every guest on radio and tv the same question?
Honestly the guy takes from everyone else’s show. I only watch him for his guests. Bring back Alien Colmes. At least he made sean look smart.
I almost hate to admit that I listen to Savage. He obviously has a severe personality disorder. I guess I listen to see just how absurd he can get with his disdain for the other talkers. In my opinion, Rush is still the king.

Agree. I know Rush is a hard act to follow, but Sean could easily make a few changes/improvements, for the better. Sean has the talent, his show just needs some tweaking.
Summary: Cumulus radio, under management of the Dickey brothers, despises the conservative talk radio that brings them so much profit. Hannity ditched them. They replaced Hannity with loud-mouth Savage, and then the audience for Savage was about half the size of the audience Hannity had been getting in the same slots.

Totally agree - reminds me of those inane morning drive talk shows. The other segment I can’t stand is the one with Jamie Dupree.
I like Hannity, he’s a fine person with his heart and brain in the right place and I wish some friend would tell him that he needs to jettison the juvenile bantering and Dupree who deflates every point Sean tries to make.
Which brings me to this question: Why are so many commercials on conservative radio for things that border on scams?
Rarely do I hear ads for trucks, groceries, or anything like that. It's usually "Call us and we'll settle your $10,000 IRS bill for $12!!!". Or "Protect your identity before it's stolen by the gypsies!!!".
One never hears these ads on music stations, for example. Very odd.

Savage was a wonderful host on KGO in 1994. I used to set up my Selectantenna to bring it in on weekend nights. He was very dynamic and confrontational, but he became Morton Downey Jr when he went national. He's so bipolar he goes from side to side on the few issues he discusses and the constant talking about his dinner and his dog are sleepsville.
Hannity is okay within three months of elections, as others have stated, if just for firing us up to vote for the squids. Otherwise his Rino butt kissing of “the architect,” and his pablum filled Republicanism, and defending outrages like the TSA is absolutely awful.
Talk radio is corporate formatted Republican flavored entertainment, and that's about it.
I don’t listen to either. Am I missing something?
Hannity is ok..a bit repetitive and dull though. Savage is angry as always...calmed down a little though. Roy Masters is by far light years beyond any of them.
