The slow decline of America since LBJ launched the Great Society

Standing on his presidential limousine, Lyndon Johnson, campaigning in Providence, R.I., in September 1964, bellowed through a bullhorn: “We’re in favor of a lot of things and we’re against mighty few.” This was a synopsis of what he had said four months earlier.

Fifty years ago this Thursday, at the University of Michigan, Johnson had proposed legislating into existence a Great Society. It would end poverty and racial injustice, “but that is just the beginning.” It would “rebuild the entire urban United States” while fending off “boredom and restlessness,” slaking “the hunger for community” and enhancing “the meaning of our lives” — all by assembling “the best thought and the broadest knowledge.”

In 1964, 76 percent of Americans trusted government to do the right thing “just about always or most of the time”; today, 19 percent do. The former number is one reason Johnson did so much; the latter is one consequence of his doing so.

Barry Goldwater, Johnson’s 1964 opponent who assumed that Americans would vote to have a third president in 14 months, suffered a landslide defeat. After voters rebuked FDR in 1938 for attempting to “pack” the Supreme Court, Republicans and Southern Democrats prevented any liberal legislating majority in Congress until 1965. That year, however, when 68 senators and 295 representatives were Democrats, Johnson was unfettered.

I still can’t believe Johnson got away with running an ad implying that Goldwater would get us into a nuclear war.

He did. It was the "daisy ad". I remember it very well. A little girl was picking daisy's in the foreground and humming an innocent tune and then the nuclear bomb went off in the background. It was monumentally effective. Goldwater was portrayed as ready to nuc North Vietnam and people believed it. Heck, he had already threated to bomb them back to the Stone Age if they didn't back off. I doubt North Vietnam would have carried on a war against us if Goldwater was President. He didn't take any crap off Communists. He knew them for the evil they were.

Truly, it was a monumentally effective political ad. Everybody from that era remembers it well.

What you may not know, however, is that the Johnson campaign paid to air "Daisy" only once -- during a September 7, 1964, telecast of David and Bathsheba on The NBC Monday Movie.

Johnson's campaign was widely criticized for using the prospect of nuclear war, as well as for the implication that Goldwater would start one, to frighten voters. The ad was immediately pulled.

However...the news media continued to use the ad in their analysis of the presidential campaign -- often airing it in its entirety. Altogether, "Daisy" was aired on network media over one hundred times. But the campaign paid for its airing only once...

George Will, singing in perfect harmony with most Washington DC Beltway Glee-Club "insiders" (Hillary Clinton, Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, Juan McCain, ad nauseum) haven't a clue about the truth behind America's decline over the last forty (40) years.

Great Christian athletes and coaches like Jim Tebow and Tony Dungy; but did they fundamentally change America's "spiritual core" ? NO.




Consider the year 1954. It was the beginning of a tidal wave of spiritual darkness that has destroyed a “Christian America”.

What happened in 1954 ?

1) WHY did LBJ's stealth "satanic agenda" in 1954 DIRECTLY CAUSE in 1963 the U.S. Supreme Court banning Christian Prayers in America’s Public schools ?
