I remember when “Sukiyaki” came out in the 60s. Everyone loved it tho we had no idea what it meant. The song has nothing whatsoever to do with food. The title in Japanese is "Ue o Muite Arukō" (when I walk, I look up), and it's about coping with loneliness and depression.

Thank you. I like Lale Andersen the best and in fact I have read that the Marlena Dietrich version is inaccurate and it is really Lale Andersen singing.
