I remember when “Sukiyaki” came out in the 60s. Everyone loved it tho we had no idea what it meant.

The song has nothing whatsoever to do with food. The title in Japanese is "Ue o Muite Arukō" (when I walk, I look up), and it's about coping with loneliness and depression.

Just from the music you can tell the song is a sad lovers song. It is just the details which you don’t get.
