Two forthcoming reports on the western Antarctic ice sheet confirm previous fears that the ice's melt will increase ocean levels by as much as 13 feet within the next few centuries. They also suggest that the process has already begun and is likely not reversible.
The New York Times reports that both papers one by NASA scientists, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, and one by University of Washington scientists to appear in Science find that the West Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of naturally-occurring warm water welling up from deep in the ocean.
None of this is surprising to those paying attention to the state of the West Antarctic, per the Times, which reports that the late Dr. John H. Mercer predicted the unstoppable melt back in 1978:
The basic problem is that much of the West Antarctic ice sheet sits below sea level in a kind of bowl-shaped depression [in] the earth. As Dr. Mercer outlined in 1978, once the part of the ice sheet sitting on the rim of the bowl melts and the ice retreats into deeper water, it becomes unstable and highly vulnerable to further melting.
Now, scientists are saying that the situation in the Antarctic has passed a crucial threshold. "There's no stabilizing mechanism," said Dr. Ian Joughin, lead author of the paper slated to appear in Science. Even if if the melt rate was too slow, it would be "too little, too late to stabilize the ice sheet," he adds. And NASA's Thomas P. Wagner said "this is really happening. There's nothing to stop it now."

If I remember right, it’s melting because there are active marine volcanoes right under it spewing out heat, which has nothing to do with any alleged greenhouse gas.
Well then, that’s it. We’re all gonna die. Can we knock off all the bogus BS about “climate disruption” now?!
NASA’s Thomas P. Wagner said “this is really happening. There’s nothing to stop it now.”
Um, I just have to ask, was there some way before?
If there is no way to stop it now, then the only thing
to do is sell your beach front properties and move
inland and build beach condos in expectation of
future profits...
It won’t be noticeable for 100 years and after that they aren’t sure if it will be in 200 or 900 years.
It’s a test run. They want to gauge our tolerance for BS before Hillary runs.
I am buying land in West Virginia. Future ocean front.
Bye bye, Florida ...
So if I want beachfront property, I should look for something in the Rocky Mountains?
Look, Look, the sun is going down.
No, no, my boy, the horizon is moving UP.
HT to FST.
True as far as it goes. But what if all the ice located on land (Iceland, Greenland, Antarctica etc.) melts? In fact it started to melt about 13,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age and ocean levels have risen some 300 feet since then. The thing to remember is that this is a totally natural process and humans don't cause it and can't stop it.
With all of the ice melting all over the world, I guess we won’t be needing those “hockey sticks” anymore.
It’s great that scientist can make these wild predictions without being accountable for whether or not they actually come to pass or not. But at least they got to collect the GRANT MONEY $$ while they were still alive.
So that piece of land I own in central PA will soon be beach-front?
Woo Hoo!
Let us assume for the moment that there is so much ice above the surface of the ocean that its melting will raise the water level.
Today I was walking over a friend’s land, located 50 miles or so west of Norfolk, VA, and I notice quite a few round stones, the kind that one gets from dredging a river bottom.
I asked him how they got there, since the river is about 1/2 mile away. I suspected that he had dredged them and hauled them there since he does things like that.
He informed me that they were there because at one time that property was under the ocean and the stones were round because of the ocean currents.
I was amazed.
So the point is that whatever caused the ocean to cover that land was something man had nothing to do with, no control over, and probably occurred long before any human had ever inhabited the North American Continent.
So the best thing to do is be cool and wait it out.
If the ocean drowns everyone in DC. NY, Baltimore and Boston, we will be that much better off for it.
humans don’t cause it and can’t stop it.
I think that will be my reply to those warmists,
Didn’t cause it, can’t stop it, don’t care.
Who do you believe, Archimedes or Al Gore?
Al Gore found the fulcrum that Archimedes lacked. It’s called panic.
More TOTAL BS.
