Michael Savage: Pope Francis Should Redistribute Vatican's Income First
Newsmax ^ | 05/12/2014 | Greg Richter

Conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage says if Pope Francis wants income redistribution he should start with his own Church.

On his Friday show, Savage said he would bid $1 million for Michelangelo's famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.

"The reason I'm offering that money to the pope and the Vatican is so they can redistribute the wealth that begins in the Vatican itself," Savage said.

Savage said he was making a point that there is vast wealth within the Catholic Church, including priceless works of art and major shares in global companies. Gold ingots could be sold for redistribution purposes, Savage said.

Francis on Friday told a group of U.N. delegates, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, that they should urge world governments to back "the legitimate redistribution of economic benefits by the state, as well as indispensable cooperation between the private sector and civil society."

Savage's response: "It's Karl Marx in a papal outfit."

He noted that Francis is from Argentina, home to liberation theology along with much of Latin America, in the 1960s and '70s. And although Francis himself never practiced liberation theology, "he was certainly shaped by it," Savage said.

“You’re trying to say he’s being a hypocrite...”

No. I never wrote that. I didn’t even imply it. There were other posters that did allude to him being hypocritical I think. But not I.

As far as I know Dr. Savage is an astute businessman and has earned whatever wealth he has accumulated. I’ve never known or heard of him telling others what they should do with their money while at the same time doing the opposite.

Every day, the Catholic Church feeds, clothes, shelters, and educates more people than any other organization in the world.

But I guess Savage doesn’t care about that.

Same thing I said here yesterday, the Vatican should empty its treasure troves and lead by example.

For that I was called an idiot, a bigot and worse. Truth sure stung the catholics here on FR hard.

I stand by my words. The Vatican and all catholics should lead by example and give up their wealth first. Of course they won’t, it’s always do as we say, not as we do with that crowd.

I always noticed in some of the smallest, most impoverished villages in Mexico, had the most gilded lavish Catholic churches!!

You mean like the one in Honduras that my parish has visited an aided over the years ... that doesn't have indoor plumbing, doors, A/C, electricity, etc.?

No but gilded and precious stone icons, golden chalices, etc. ordaining these sites are not necessary in a village where most of the residents have no indoor running water, no electricity, no toilets nada! Even a Protestant gymnasium would be in excess of these simple people but a galvanized metal building with open ends could certainly offer a place of worship to people who have no roofs over their own homes, sleep on dirt floors and use community ditches as toilets.

I do know all about Leviticus as well as Numbers and Deuteronomy, as well as how God describes "the" Tabernacle in the desert.

Trust me, the Ark of the Covenant, containing the stone tablets with the Law etched on them, the showbread, the Seraphim and Cherubim guarding the Ark in the Holy of Holies, resemble none of the many Cathedrals in impoverished countries around the world, not to mention the Vatican!

Certainly not when the Pope is demanding "those who have, share more of their wealth with the poor!"

It would seem that this leader, like so many liberal Marxists, proclaim "Do as I say, not as I/we do!"

Then they would be in the ideal position to “share some of their own wealth” don’t you think, or is it only others who should do so?

Rome was sacked in 410 by the Goths, 50 years before the Vandals got to it.

And that’s assuming no Emperor in a financial fix melted them down during the many civil wars fought for the throne.

Subsidiarity is an organizing principle that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority.

Problem here is I strongly suspect the Pope was talking not about redistribution of wealth within a city or nation. He was talking about worldwide redistribution.

The least centralized authority competent to handle such redistribution would more or less by definition be a world government. One empowered to force national governments to cough up.

The Catholic church is the second biggest land owner in the US behind the Feds.

I will assume by "second biggest" you mean in land value, not acreage, where I don't think the Church is even in the running.

I don't know but I suspect most of the land the Church owns has a church or other religious buildings on it, and is "valuable" simply because it's centrally located in a city which has grown up around it.

A church building is only marginally useful for other purposes, so the get the full value from the land, you would have to tear down the churches and build office buildings or condos or something.

Would that really be in the best interests of the nation, the city in question, or even the poor?

No I am talking about the billions in retail, commercial and office buildings the church owns out right or controls.

“Some idea of the real estate and other forms of wealth controlled by the [Ed.: Roman] Catholic Church may be gathered by the remark of a member of the New York Catholic Conference, namely ‘that his church probably ranks second only to the United States government in total annual purchase.’ Another statement, made by a nationally syndicated Catholic priest, perhaps is even more telling. ‘The Catholic Church’, he said, ‘must be the biggest corporation in the United States. We have a branch office in every neighborhood. Our assets and real estate holdings must exceed those of Standard Oil, A.T.&T., and U.S. Steel combined. And our roster of dues-paying members must be second only to the tax rolls of the United States government’.” – Avro Manhattan (“The Vatican Billions”)

Well, then you should have no trouble coming up with actual numbers and references to prove they’re accurate.

Naw, not worth the time. If you are really interested then go look yourself. The church goes way out it's way to not have their name directly on things related to real estate. It's out there but I already did the research years ago and made my mind up when I ran directly into them on a development deal.

In that case I apologize. Between reading the other posters, and the wording of yours, It sounded to me like you were saying the same thing as several others regarding Savage’s statements.

But it has to start small.

Give a bottle of water to the homeless person on the street.
Just one example.

Please. Let's change that to "ALL Catholics who agree with the Pope".

Give a bottle of water to the homeless person on the street.

"Redistribution of wealth" is not generally used to describe private charity. It almost always means government action to take from those the group in power views as undeserving and give to those it views as deserving.

If the Pope doesn't know that, he shouldn't be holding that office. Or any other, for that matter.
