Rep. Trey Gowdy, the tea party Republican tapped to lead the new committee investigating the 2012 Benghazi attacks, made a telling slip Wednesday morning in describing his mission.
Asked by MSNBCs Joe Scarborough about the possibility that his panels work would continue into the 2016 election campaign, Gowdy replied that if an administration is slow-walking document production, I cant end a trial simply because the defense wont cooperate.
A trial? And the Obama administration is the defense? So much for that serious investigation House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) promised; his new chairman intends to play prosecutor, proving the administrations guilt to the jury in this case, the public.
As a legal matter, Gowdy, a volcanic former prosecutor, is on shaky ground declaring his committee a court and his investigation a trial. But his honesty is refreshing, and it confirms what seemed implicit in Boehners selection of the second-term South Carolinian to head the panel over more experienced and less combative colleagues.
In a broader sense, Gowdys rapid ascent in the party fits closely with what House Republicans are doing in this midterm election year: abandoning any pretense of legislating in favor of unremitting hostilities with the White House.

Opinion piece — but still a good example of WaPo hoseshtt
It's not that the liberals can't understand the connection -- they simply don't want to understand.
Fixed it.
Hey Dana, if you and your other reporter friends weren’t so busy giving the president (redacted), you might actually report the truth rather than the total BS the Whitehouse emits.
I wonder what the effect on public opinion would be if instead of incessantly talking only about the political gains/losses for each side, when reporting Benghazi the media reminded us of the actual details of the case and the gravity of a president so detached and inept, not to mention the coordinated effort of the media/state machine to LIE to the American people thereby avoiding political fallout.
As they would constantly be doing if this were a republican administration.
Did i miss the articles in which the wapo calls for the wh and holder to provide information to congress, or in which they spell out the questions about the IRS, Benghazi and other scandals? Or call for impeachment?
The repubs better buck up the winds are coming.
May they get swept away with their friends the democrats.
They’re slow and late, lets see how weak they are.
Coverage will be the opposite of how they would treat a Democrat in the same spot. I'm amazed the Washington Post is still in business...
I highly recommend Wikipedia as an excellent source for good examples of the use of metaphors. Based on your total misreading of the use of this descriptive device by Congressman Gowdy (when he used the terms "trial" and "defense") it is clear that you are badly in need of a refresher English writing course.
Dana Milbank is the journalistic equivalent of an inflatable sex doll. Which is why he’s such a favorite with the WH.
I hope Gowdy has a personal plan for counterattack.
Because the GOPe sure as heck isn't planning anything more than giving their usual stammering deer-in-the-headlights look.
Dana Milbank ‘splainin Obama and his toadies is like James Carville ‘splainin $100 bills dragged thru trailer parks.
Saying “Trial” warrants an editorial from the Compost, but “My Moslem faith” not a peep.
People trust the press about as much as they trust used car salesmen - the MSM’s dug their own grave with biased stunts.
Gowdy’s needs to ignore them and do the job he was tasked with...
Trey Gowdy is about to be slimed and slandered like never before. He is about to get the same treatment that Ken starr got, only probably worse.
Gee I remember the heavily promoted, constantly televised all-Democrat kangaroo court known as The Watergate Hearings. When this surpasses that, get back to me.
