Sick of the gas tax?
What about a tax on every mile you drive?
A new bill going through Sacramento would tax drivers for every mile they are on the road.
The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon could be replaced with a "miles driven fee" of $0.05 cents or so per mile driven, under state legislation proposed by a Bay Area lawmaker.
State transit officials note that there's not nearly enough money available to fix the many bridges and roads in California that are in desperate need of repair.
A federal highway fund, based on taxes on fuel, is expected to run dry this summer.
We've got to figure out how to pay for infrastructure, state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) said. One philosophy is, if you use it, you should pay for it.
Under SB 1077, introduced by DeSaulnier, a still-to-be-determined California city would begin taxing motorists in January 2016. The longer your commute, the more you would pay.
That may yet be a tough sell, but a $0.05 per mile fee could raise over $100 billion for roads in some parts of the state, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

Suppose they applied the same philosophy to people who use food stamps, section 8 housing, affirmative action, drug treatment, subsidies for illegitimacy, STD treatment and all the other favorite lib programs?
The problem is that between mandated improvements in mileage, and incentives to buy extremely fuel-efficient cars (I just got an electric car - no gas tax!), the next obvious step is to tax per mile regardless of what you’re driving. They’ll just note the odometer during every annual inspection and bill you accordingly.
That they glean even more info about you is just a bonus.
says it all. Dims never met a tax they did not love. Kaliforyastan you have what you have. The only way you will survive the invasion from the south, the far East, from Asia, from the Middle East is to say enough is enough and take your state back. Otherwise, you are dead. Or, do the best thing you can do for yourself and family, pack up and leave. No job is worth having to give half of what you earn to the state. Make less somewhere else and pay less tax. You'd be happier in a FREE state.
The gas tax is a mileage tax.
Resistance to the tax will take the form of reduced driving. It will have the effect of an overall revenue reduction. The popularity of biking will increase.
Oh my. Hardly.
Cars will use the same tracking that big rigs NOW USE - they not only will know exactly how many miles you drive each day - but WHERE -
and they will have your location, at all times, to the square foot.
They will also know if you break the speed limit somewhere AND if you make a 'hard brake' incident - which will impact your insurance and make it easier for yanking your license altogether. The goal - if you know anything about Agenda 21, is to curtail movement of 'the citizenry'.
And THAT is the purpose.
Wake up, people. Stop just looking at what they SAY - look behind the curtain.
Those ag check stations at the borders will become out of state toll booths
>Those ag check stations at the borders will become out of state toll booths
They will have to build a lot more of them or close a lot of roads. I got a 4WD.

Hmmm... A localized EMP should work wonders... Not too hard to build. Of course, your digital speedometer might stop too.
I’m counting the days and have been talking to realtors.
CA is also 12th in GSP per capita.
Summary - overtaxed and mismanaged.
In some cases, such as with a salad bar, restaurants already do charge two people if one item is ordered. Now, if a restaurant did that all the time, I would have many choices. I could patronize other restaurants. I could quit dining out altogether. Though I can cut back on driving, I cannot stop driving completely.
In addition, I do not need to worry about a restaurant tracking my eating habits and raising prices “for my own good.” I don't have to worry about the restaurant using the data to convict me of crimes, or a hacker to steal info from the database. I don't have to worry about low income people or other groups getting waivers.
Your analogy fails.
Happy Mother’s day. Your analogy failed.
Conservatives believe in paying for what they use instead of having others pay for their share.
We have tons of pseudo conservatives on Free Republic who never donate to Free Republic and want others to pay for their other life styles.
I never argued for others paying for what people use. I simply pointed out the difference between a tax, and a private purchase or donation.
The thieves in the California government will steal this money too!
The Governators’s car is going to be racking up huge indicated mileage.

California has 2/3 dim majority in both houses, they can do anything they want including changing the vote from top in each party to top 2 period.
