House Republicans find 10% of tea party donors audited by IRS

Tells commissioner to come clean

By Stephen Dinan-The Washington Times - Updated: 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Despite assurances to the contrary, the IRS didn’t destroy all of the donor lists scooped up in its tea party targeting — and a check of those lists reveals that the tax agency audited 10 percent of those donors, much higher than the audit rate for average Americans, House Republicans revealed Wednesday.

Republicans argue that the Internal Revenue Service still hasn’t come clean about the full extent of its targeting, which swept up dozens of conservative groups.

“The committee uncovered new information indicating that after groups provided the information to the IRS, nearly one in 10 donors were subject to audit,” Rep. Charles W. Boustany Jr., Louisiana Republican and chairman of the Ways and Means Committee’s oversight panel, told IRS Commissioner John Koskinen at a hearing Wednesday.

“The abuse of discretion and audit selection must be identified and stopped,” he said.

Mr. Koskinen didn’t specifically address the accusations during the hearing, and the IRS didn’t respond to a request for comment late Wednesday evening.

The revelation was made on the same day that the House voted on a nonbinding resolution asking the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS targeting...

The title needed to state that -

you were

TEN TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE AUDITED

if you were a Tea Party donor.

This kind of corruption should inspire some pitchforks and torches.

True, 10% seems like a lot, but someone needs to figure out what the rate would be for the this demographic of income earners without respect to political affiliation. It’s possible that these donors are in such a tax bracket as to make them subject to a higher than average audit rate.

Didn’t get to your post before I made the same point in #82. Agreed.

Ten percent of Tea Party donors were audited and the butt kissers at the New York Times don't think it's a big story?

Hey Jill Abramson - how would you feel if 10% of your company was audited by the IRS... at the command of a conservative administration?

I was audited for the first time in my life, over a non-issue. It has cost me $5K so far to defend against the IRS, when they’ve lost an identical case in tax court.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, as you make all good and reasonable points.

However, when you wrote:

” - - - Dems’ only hope is to latch onto some Republicans’ mistake and make a campaign out of it. - - - “

it occurred to me that you want to NOT hold Democrats accountable for THEIR mistakes, but that Republicans should patiently wait until ALL of the facts are released by the “LIE, DENY AND DON’T COMPLY” Obama Administration.

My question to you is as follows:

“How does your political action philosophy differ from what Doormat Republicans such as Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, Ryan, Issa, Mike Rogers, Peter King of New York have been doing for the last 4 years?”

A “Lie, Deny and don’t Comply” Rogue Administration has unlimited control over the Legistlative Branch that refuses to hold a Rogue Administration accountable, as we witnessed during cave-in Republican response during the Autumn, 2013 Reid-Obama partial Federal shutdown.

Your position seems to be consistent with the Doormat Republicans who are currently refusing to use their Constitutional Power.

If I have drawn any incorrect conclusions about your philosophy, please correct me at your earliest convenience.

If that’s to happen, it’ll take We the People. No politician on the planet will do that until we break out the pitchforks. We’re overdue for some pitchfork wielding.

There will be no impeachment. Just forget about that. If Obama was (name the worst thing you can think of) he would not be impeached. Even if we had 100% in both houses.

That’s an excellent point. You can leave “probably” out of it though. Their vitriol directed at conservatives is enough proof. There will be no impeachment from this congress. Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Ukraine, all of these have ended badly. Maybe ours will be different?

If they are reporting 10% you can bet it is at least double that.

We should be surrounding all IRS buildings, chain the doors shut and let the treasonous bastards starve to death.

Yes, I hate this G-damn bunch that much.

Boehner, Boehner? I think you’ve got Boehner all wrong. The Tea Party is more of an enemy to Boehner than any Rat group.

That would be good, but I think a better idea is marches on state capitals demanding nullification of federal supremacy. Secession in other words.

True. This has all of the preliminary indications of a game-changing scandal, but we need much more information. What was the sample size? What was the "official" reason for the audits (e.g., were they "random," or were there red-flags in the returns)? What was the error rate in the audits vs. a typical audit?

One big question that comes to mind is whether the donors in question attempted to deduct their contributions - most tea party groups (and analogous groups on the left) are organized as 501(c)(4) organizations (or, in this case, were seeking such organization). Unlike donations to 501(c)(3) organizations, donations to 501(c)(4) groups are generally not deductible for the taxpayer. A surprising number of people do not know that, and a surprising number of people do their own taxes without consulting an accountant.
