The Sacrilegious Sarah Palin
The American Conservative ^ | 4-27-14 | Rod Dreher

Posted on 04/30/2014 8:13:49 AM PDT by Flame Retardant

Man, the 12 minute speech Sarah Palin gave to the NRA convention is awful. It's just witless, red-meat blathering, delivered in that nasal whine of hers that makes it sound like she's chewing wads of tinfoil. For people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like.

Fast-forward in the video to the 6:30 mark, though, and listen to what she says about terrorists. It's part of a long harangue about lily-livered liberals, delivered in such a way that makes Archie Bunker sound like Cicero. Money quote:

"Oh, but you can't offend them, can't make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists."
OK, stop. Not only is this woman, putatively a Christian, praising torture, but she is comparing it to a holy sacrament of the Christian faith. It's disgusting--but even more disgusting, those NRA members, many of whom are no doubt Christians, cheered wildly for her....

Palin and all those who cheered her sacrilegious jibe ought to be ashamed of themselves. For us Christians, baptism is the entry into new life. Palin invoked it to celebrate torture. Even if you don't believe that waterboarding is torture, surely you agree that it should not be compared to baptism, and that such a comparison should be laughed at. What does it say about the character of a person that they could make that joking comparison, and that so many people would cheer for it. Nothing good--and nothing that does honor to the cause of Jesus Christ.

If I thought that kind of hateful declaration and abuse of the Christian religion was what conservatism stood for, I wouldn't be able to call myself a conservative...

Waterboarding is (or was) part of U.S. military Officer Training.

It is NOT TORTURE!

You've left one out, but that's ok for it doesn't work very well lacking the contextual set-up from which it arose.

Somebody here compared her to Thatcher.

I disagreed but offered that Thatcher herself if likened to James Bond (coolly sophisticated, erudite, high-brow tastes, effective agent) then Sarah Palin was as the American agent Jason Bourne.

Bourne could kick Bond's ass any day of the week.

Sarah Barracuda for President.

Start cranking out the bumper stickers.

Waterboarding is torture. Gov. Palin is the right’s Joe Biden. I know I’m outnumbered on this thread. I don’t care.

Waterboarding is NOT TORTURE!!!!

True. Next time you're in the shower, put the washcloth over your face and let the water hit it for a minute or two. You might come up sneezing, snorting and even coughing, but no permanent harm. It is not as bad as getting water up your nose at the beach.

Since (I’m assuming) you don’t believe in Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice, it’s in very poor taste for you to get off a silly one-liner by professing the faith ironically. It borders on offensive.

I'm with you. The Palin adoration will never intimidate me. I mostly leave it alone. But, I figured Dreher would get slimed. He's a good man and a good thinker / writer.

I think people get confused because water-boarding is an accepted form of torture for military training of Americans, and has been for many decades at least.

During the Vietnam war, even basic training trainees who were captured in E & E exercises, were tortured pretty well in Little Vietnam, at Ft. Polk, and GI’s from all branches who attended more sophisticated training, were water-boarded in large numbers.

I guess I should be offended by that. I’m not. I’m laughing. You have a real gift for humor man.

I mean I don’t know why that is funny really. On another thread, another time, maybe even a different place in this one it wouldn’t be funny. But it sure strikes me as funny now. Again, I don’t know why but thanks anyway for a good laugh!

Yeah, but Romulus hates me.

He wants me to fumble the football in the Big Game next week.

Dear Romulus: I believe in Jesus Christ, and I love Him, and He is the one who informs me I should be funny and make people laugh. When EveningStar posted a large list of people Palin had been compared to, I noticed Jesus wasn't on the list. The Holy Spirit moved upon me to make a joke about that.

And Jesus approves.

There is no physical injury and when the process is complete, the subject is in fine health.

And it's like baptism in that it could be described as a "come to Jesus" experience...

And, if you're going to quote Reagan (your tagline), at least post the full quote in context... Libertopian is NOT Conservative.

Huh? Tiny Matt Damon couldn't ruffle a Sean Connery feather even at Connery's present age.

(Someone needs to make a computer simulation of this.)

Check Flame Retardant's posting history. He made quite a few replies to existing threads before posting a new thread. His posts seem pretty conservative, BTW

As for Rod Dreher, several of his articles have been posted here over the years. Some have met with approval. Some have met with disapproval. Some have met with indifference. However, if you wish to have him added to the "not welcome here" list, you can certainly let the admins know.
