LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million in response to the racist remarks he allegedly made in a recorded audio clip.
Silver spoke to the press at 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will “do everything in my power” to force the sale of the Clippers.
“The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage,” Silver said. “I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.”

Something else interesting about this is Sterling has owned the Clippers since 1981. That’s over 30 years of skeletons buried in closets all over the league he knows about. I’d guess there are some tightly clenched sphincters out there in NBA land.

But you're right. That team is currently community property absent a legal divorce/separation with property settlement. She can either force him to buy her out, or she gets to reduce her settlement in lieu of full ownership.
But who knows, she's filthy rich either way.

Didn’t find anything that permits the NBA to ban Sterling or force him to sell the team under these circumstances. There is no arbitration clause, so if Sterling sues, he will get an injunction against the NBA denying him his right to run his franchise.
Section 2 of the Bylaws is interesting; especially 2.01, which requires the players to be of “good moral character”; whatever that means. Interestingly, there is no requirement for an owner to be of good moral character.
No, you wouldn’t if you read the NBA Constitution and Bylaws. He’s not going to leave $500+ million on the table.
Hell, they could demand all communications of everyone even tangentially associated.
Of particular import is Kevin Johnson, Mayor of Sacramento and Hall of Famer.
All the sports TV Commentators who are reporting dirt on the "rumors in the league" and "everyone knew..."
Oh boy. I really hope Stirling has balls and is really pissed off. I'd buy all the popcorn at my local market and a case of butter. This would make for some interesting TV viewing and watercooler conversation.

Discovery in this case will destroy the NBA. After it's over you'll not see another pro basketball game on TV until a different league forms. Maybe another ABA.
I read the NBA Constitution and Bylaws. There is no provision that supports what the Commissioner did today. See the link in my post #404.
Even if it applied to an owner, which it doesn't; how could you ascribe his private conversations, with reasonable expectation of privacy, to serve as reasonable proof that he had violated the clause?
If he wants to do it he can put a hurt on the NBA.
Maybe not in a court of law, but unfortunately the illegal recording has already been played for the American public and that alone is enough to crucify him and probably align the forces of liberalism and journalism (but I repeat myself) to use whatever private bylaws and loopholes can be twisted under the NBA's bylaws and governing constitution to get him expelled and fined. After all that's what liberals specialize in doing to the U.S. Constitution and using it against the rest of us!
The phrase, "detrimental to the league" is overly broad; and there is no morals clause that applies to owners.
I didn’t say it applied to owners. Thought my pointing out that if players were required to be of good moral character, there’d be a lot of openings for player positions.
He may have the votes, but the NBA Constitution does not address this type of private behavior. Adam Silver is going to lose in the end.

He probably figures that it's more profitable to deal with Sterling's probable lawsuit in the offseason than to deal with a boycott by racist players now.
