SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Two Long Island high school students have been suspended for allegedly bringing a Confederate flag to school.
Brother Gary Cregan, principal of St. Anthonys High School in South Huntington, said the two seniors walked in with a Confederate flag draped around their shoulders during an after-hours sporting event at the school.
As CBS 2′s Kathryn Brown reported, there is outrage and disgust on Long Island.
The African-American students who immediately saw it really exercised heroic restraint and fortunately a teacher immediately confiscated the flag and took the students out of the gym, Cregan said.
The students were initially suspended for 10 days, but Cregan decided Tuesday they wont be allowed back, Brown reported.
Cregan wrote a letter to parents saying the use of any symbols designed to revive past injustices or to inflame discrimination or racial intolerance, is completely unacceptable and profoundly offensive, Newsday reported.
Cregan said he sees the flag as a symbol of hate.
I find it just very hard to even imagine why any student in 2014 would even consider or think that a Confederate flag would be anything other than a symbol of hate, Cregan said.
Its absolutely absurd, I dont understand why you would bring up things from the past that are hateful, student Jessica Flynn said.
It represents slavery to us. It represents racism and prejudice to us, parent JuJu Quinnonez added. Believe me, I am all for freedom of speech but to have someone come in to school with that flag draped around their shoulder Im not really sure what the intent was.
In response to those who said the students were exercising their right to free speech, Cregan said there are limits.
I certainly think this particular symbol of hate falls in the category of something that should be excised from our culture, Cregan said.
The students havent explained why they did it. St. Anthonys is a private Catholic school and isnt bound by the First Amendment right to free speech.
Still, the New York Civil Liberties Union said all people should be able to express their views freely, even the offensive ones.
Our motto is more speech, not censorship or punishment, NYCLU director Donna Lieberman told Brown. Helping children understand the impact of this patently offensive expressive activity.
Tensions are so high among students at St. Anthonys that the principal said he has security concerns once the suspension is over. Hes made the decision that the students involved arent coming back at all.
The teens involved did not respond to CBS 2′s calls for comment.
Though that would, I'm sure, also be rejected by the school official.
Yep. And the late Chakwe Lumbaba (or however it’s spelled), Jackson mayor, could publicly and loudly carry on day and night about turning a portion of the South into an “African Republic” (because those have been successful all over the world/s) and not a peep was made-the mayor of a capitol city, not some unknown student.
But the mere glimpse of a flag may touch off riots or something.
I’m so sick of this I’m about to bust. The more I hear of it, the more I feel inclined to fly a freakin row of Confederate flags in my front yard, just to show that I damn well can, just like the sodomites can parade in public in all states of perversion, and Mexicans can fly the Mexican flag over an upside-down American flag, and blacks can fly that African flag.
So Trayvon Martin was caught with marijuana, and busted with stolen jewelry in his backpack, and broke one student's nose in an "MMA-style attack". But he was only suspended a month.
Bring a flag to school -- unless it's a Mexican flag -- and get suspended (California). Bring a Confederate flag and get expelled. This is your America.
This situation is entirely inflamed by the principal.
And it is a deliberate conflation of state’s rights with racism, and thereby the denial of an important teaching opportunity to the students.
The principal is a punk. What a surprise.
So what does the Confederate flag have to do with race?
I bet they would be HONORED if they had a GAY PRIDE flag.
May 5 is coming up...cinco de mayo..
the illegal alien Mexicans who waltz around the school with their flag will be invited to hang it above the Stars and Stripes...
Why? Because we need to welcome those ILLEGAL WETBACKS. Of course, I don’t. Cinco de Mayo should be the ‘Burn A Mexican Flag Day’.
How many of the students were actually born in Africa?
LOL
Political Correctness is Communist. Even Private Schools are breeding grounds for Marxists. Homeschooling is the only way to raise Conservative kids.

Heroic restraint? Because they didn't beat whitey down?
Actually more people were enslaved under The Stars and Stripes than The Stars and Bars.
Sane principals? I think Mr. Thomas Grasso, my elementary principal and Ella T. Grasso’s husband, was the last of a breed, a sane principal.
Public school and private schools should be charged with conservative abuse.
Free speech in America?
Diversity of opinions and views?
Only for non-whites.
Many campuses have Black groups.
Let whites try to start a White group and see the hate and potential violence from the Blacks/Leftists.
Brother Cretin is so fair and balanced /s
You are so correct, I have been telling everyone I know that private school, including many, if not most religious ones, are no more safe from the rot these days than the public system. People are going to have to start making hard choices now, while they still can. Do they realise that the government is burning the midnight oil to implement various schemes to take over their children? How far might that go?
Who would have believed, 15 years ago, that their elementary age children could be taught the grittier details of sodomy, and be told not to tell their parents about it? What’s being done to children, including children from good God-fearing homes, is going unnoticed by even those families, because they think their children are simply getting a “good education”. Where do they think the present generation of young adults came from, who think “consensus” is the highest societal priority?
The Confederate Flag is one of the 6 flags that have flown over Texas.
The last time I visited the Alamo the Confederate Flag was still flying there.
It’s part of our history, and we can’t say it never happened, because it did.
