A new online poll found that Americans just are not interested in the the World Cup, which is the world's top sporting event.
According to the poll, "two in three Americans do not plan to follow this year's tournament," only "7 percent said they anticipated following it closely," 86 percent of Americans "said they either know nothing or only a little bit about the World Cup, and more than two-thirds did not know Brazil is the 2014 host nation."

The heck is the world cup anyway?
It’s a 3rd world game and should be outlawed in this country!!
What’s funny is that the most attended WC was the 1994 one in the US.
I guarantee, if the US makes the Finals, it will get Super Bowl-like ratings.
World What?
Who cares, it sure isn’t football.
Maybe I’ll paint something just to watch it dry.
I am hoping for Germany.
When this country has been degraded to 3rd world status, the youth will be ready to join!
Its not going to happen. If the US makes it to the consolation game that would be a good showing.
The upside is the World Cup will be played during the fall and winter in South America so it should be a pleasant experience for the players.
They were so close to the semis in 2002, pretty much outplayed Germany.
Before anyone jumps on me, YES, YES, I KNOW the average soccer game is only 26 seconds long. It only seems like nine hours.
Dream on.
There is nothing as edge-of-seat exciting as a 1-0 World Cup soccer game.
It will happen someday...No, not this year, but if it did, everyone who dissed soccer, will be glued to the TV set just like the rest of us.
I was going to ask if it was sailing or downhill skiing. But I really don’t care which; I’m not watching it even if there is someone named Bubba playing.
A sailboat race, I think.
The quality of American players is improving but it will be a long time before the US even wins.
You need to bring the emotion to the game but it has never had the following here that it does in the rest of the world.
The other third are Mexicans.
I was thinking America’s Cup at first. Don’t much care about that either.
But, but Slow Joe, who is there to throw out the first ball, said yesterday the cup is “the most consequential sporting event in the world.”
Which just goes to prove that Joe’s elevator doesn’t go to the top floor.
“I guarantee, if the US makes the Finals, it will get Super Bowl-like ratings”
In this country?
No.
I actually grew up playing soccer...not on an organized team, but in pick up games. The person who was instrumental in bringing soccer to Alabama was a neighbor:

and we learned the game before our friends had even heard of it.
My brother even went on to college on a soccer scholarship....as did two of the other kids I played with. One of them went on to play in the USISL.
So I am familiar with the game.
But no...it will not get Superbowl ratings in this country.
