The game is up for climate change believers
Telegraph (UK) ^ | 06 Apr 2014 | Charles Moore

Most of us pay some attention to the weather forecast. If it says it will rain in your area tomorrow, it probably will. But if it says the same for a month, let alone a year, later, it is much less likely to be right. There are too many imponderables.

The theory of global warming is a gigantic weather forecast for a century or more. However interesting the scientific inquiries involved, therefore, it can have almost no value as a prediction. Yet it is as a prediction that global warming (or, as we are now ordered to call it in the face of a stubbornly parky 21st century, “global weirding”) has captured the political and bureaucratic elites. All the action plans, taxes, green levies, protocols and carbon-emitting flights to massive summit meetings, after all, are not because of what its supporters call “The Science”. Proper science studies what is – which is, in principle, knowable – and is consequently very cautious about the future – which isn’t. No, they are the result of a belief that something big and bad is going to hit us one of these days.

Some of the utterances of the warmists are preposterously specific. In March 2009, the Prince of Wales declared...

--snip--

Last week, the latest IPCC report made the usual warnings about climate change, but behind its rhetoric was a huge concession. The answer to the problems of climate change lay in adaptation, not in mitigation, it admitted. So the game is up.

Scientists, Rupert Darwall complains, have been too ready to embrace the “subjectivity” of the future, and too often have a “cultural aversion to learning from the past”. If they read this tremendous book they will see those lessons set out with painful clarity.

This whole thing, the “do you believe in global warming” charade, will go down in history as one of the biggest scams ever.

Greenland was a tropical paradise, by the way, before humans started driving cars. That is a fact, people.

No tree-hugger has been able to successfully answer my question.

“What’s the temperature supposed to be?”

The answer to the problems of climate change lay in adaptation, not in mitigation, it admitted. So the game is up.

While efforts at mitigation required draconian (and unnecessary) economic changes, I suspect that they will insist on adaptation prior to the actual climate change. Thus, they will stay in the driver's seat trying to exert their inordinate control on the rest of us.

That’s why they won’t listen, and never listen to anyone about any of the issues they support -

because their righteousness is wrapped up in these issues,
and you’re attacking that righteousness when you point out the
invalidity of the issues they support.

"Scientists... too often have a “cultural aversion to learning from the past”.

I would go further. Based on personal and professional experience I would say that for a scientist, who has a formed opinion on a given subject in his field, to change his opinion based on however much empirical data you want to bring, is exceedingly rare.

The average scientist holds to his opinions as dogmatically as the most zealous ideologue. "Climate science" is a prime example. This is what Kuhn identified as the power of the paradigm.

They will never, never admit they were wrong.

They will attempt to re-write the laws of physics, even the laws of mathematics they do that.

If necessary, they will attempt to undermine all of science rather than admit their errors, because that will mean that they are dupes, which in turn will mean that they are stupid fools.

It will take a revolt from other scientific disciplines before the emperor will be seen to have no clothes.

There will be some who will maintain their denial stance until they die. Lie till you die.

But legislators will continue to pass laws favoring the demands of the “global warming” and “climate change” crowd because they are willing to pay big bucks for it and our politicians need money to stay in the game.

I fear that Algore and his ilk will continue to do well.

Wishful thinking right now. They will never let the scam go.

However, I watch the Cryosphere today website and some interesting things are going on.

Antarctica sea ice continues to grow like mad. Right now it is 33% (+1.298 Million Sq miles) above normal.

In the Arctic the Sea ice continues to recover and right now it is only 4% (600,000 sq miles) below normal.

Combined world sea ice is 4% above normal(Arctic is coming off it’s max, while Antarctic near min).

What is interesting though is not all areas of the Arctic are down, some are even above normal. The areas that seem to be down are the ones that always melt away by July anyhow (i.e. Sea of Okhotsk) but the ones that are normal or better seem to ones that don’t melt (i.e. the Arctic Basin).

What this means is by the summer, the Arctic sea ice might go above normal for the first time in a long while.

Of course anything can happen and who knows, but if the Arctic sea ice goes above normal and stays above normal, then the Alarmist are going to have a real hard time explaining that away.

No tree-hugger has been able to successfully answer my question.

“What’s the temperature supposed to be?”

If you check out the geologic history of the earth, you would find that permanent ice as it exists in Greenland and Antarctica exists only about 5% of the time. So the answer is:

"A lot warmer than it is now."

Even worse, the tree huggers cannot answer the following questions:

1. Why did mile thick sheets of ice come to cover substantial parts of the Northern Hemisphere starting about 250,000 years ago?

2. Why did those ice sheets melt?

3. Why were Vikings able to raise cattle in Greenland 1000 years ago, when it is now too cold to do so?
