Of the thousands of people I have known or covered in the Massachusetts Legislature over the years, Steve Doran of Lexington would be the last I would have expected to wind up in prison.
Last week Doran, 58, a former 14-year member of the House of Representatives, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to drug charges.
At one time, Doran had it all -- a lovely wife, four daughters, an extended family, a fine home, a solid reputation, good friends and an upwardly mobile political career. He threw it all away.
What happened

Oh, he’s a Democrat. You just have to read the whole article carefully to learn that, same point some other posters made. Anyway, it’s MA—Democrat is the way to bet.
here the deal all and any can fall..it just how the press tell the story of a dem vs rep fall.
I pray the man finds his way..but that always requires seeking hard truth first..not tolerate and love
I’ve seen before and after pic’s of people on meth. Is this a before or after picture?
That’s what I never understood, just how exactly does one get addicted to meth or heroin? Are they at a party one night and someone walks up to them and says “Hey, ya wanna try some heroin or meth?” “Heroin or meth? Why SURE!” Seriously, what kind of psycho says yes to that crap? It’s like someone coming up to you saying “Hey, would you like to drink some battery acid?” It’s freakin’ nuts, how many examples are there of people dying from that stuff, countless, yet people *still* start doing it.
“...his party affiliation isnt mentioned...:
Not necessary This is MA. There is only one party.
ALMOST no place does it say the creep was a DEMOCRAT...
WORSE than being a crack addict he was a DEMOCRAT..
Seriously???? Put a pork pie hat on him and you have Heisenberg.
> He had an innocent-looking ...
Had = past tense.
Sorry .... but that brought THIS to mind ......
kinda proves the one-party state theory, doesn’t it?
IIRC he had never done drugs before and thought that now that he had made it he could party a bit. The cocaine killed him (Messed up his heart.
Ever since then I've been even more paranoid about drugs than I was before! If one dose of anything can kill you (and it can!) then why take the risk. I'll just have a beer!
Yes ... painfully
A wonderful old priest (88) who is also a family friend always preached about the 4 P’s. He says all sin is rooted in the 4 P’s - Pride, Power, Pocketbook, Pleasure.
He was probably fooling around with some woman half his age, and the drugs were part of the fooling around. Most men who trip off into hard drugs late in life have succumbed to a dual temptation. Better to opt for the red sports car.
From the article:
“Then there were hard-to-believe rumors around town and at the Statehouse that he had left his family and moved to the South End or to Cape Cod, or both. There were reports that he had found a different love and a new life. There were reports that he had fallen, or was dragged, into the drug scene where crystal meth was prevalent.”
South End & Cape Cod (Provincetown) are dead giveaways that he came out as gay and left his fake life/wife.
Hence his new life, new love. Etc. They leave that out.
Can't say in all cases but I had a friend that suffered a series of debilitating injuries and was on a pain regiment of opiates... the rules started to change on those Rx's so he was cut off - doctors would no longer write the scrips.
He started buying the pills off the street; expensive & dangerous to do so. Someone in this supply chain suggested heroin - cheaper and way more "effective".
His funeral is this Wednesday, 6pm at Our Lady of Calvary in Philadelphia
Unreal, but there are so many examples of that it’s ridiculous yet people still do it. Look at that kid actor River Phoenix, someone offered him coke in a bathroom in a club and he took one snort and *bang* that was all she wrote, no going back.. he died right in front of his brother out in the street, said he was flapping around like a fish out of water as his heart slowly failed. And he had everything that kid, easy movie star job making millions, he could have retired by the time he was 30, could have done anything he wanted and one stupid decision and it’s all over. Look at Phillip Seymour Hoffman, another idiot. I know people out there working 3 jobs, all they do is work to make ends meet, and here is a guy with more money than God and he’s doing heroin! John Belushi, Chris Farley, Whitney Houston, are other ones, the list just goes on and on on and that’s just the ones that are publicized, people die everyday from that junk yet people *still* start doing it, it’s unreal.
Ah! Not the 20 something bimbo then. Yeah, the meth is the least of his issues. That explains mcuh - thanks for the background info.
