Chick-fil-A Takes KFC's Chicken Crown Even With Fewer Stores and Closing on Sundays
Christian Post ^ | 04/04/2014 | Leonardo Blair

Despite having fewer stores, which are also closed on Sundays so employees can spend time with their families and attend church, Chick-fil-A has taken KFC's crown as the leader in the U.S. chicken fast-food industry.

A Yahoo! Finance report noted that YUM! Brands, which owns KFC, removed the phrase from the company's latest annual report that once described KFC as "the leader in the U.S. chicken [quick-service restaurant] segment."

That title, says food industry researcher Technomic, now belongs to the worshipful Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A because its locations do more business than KFC restaurants, according to The Associated Press.

While KFC still remains much bigger than Chick-fil-A globally, Chick-fil-A has been leading KFC since 2012.

Chick-fil-A reportedly had 1,775 locations and pulled in $5.05 billion in sales last year, according to Technomic. KFC had 4,438 stores that pulled in $4.22 billion in U.S. sales.

Most of Chick-fil-A's restaurants are located in the South and the company has attracted a very loyal following for its chicken sandwiches.

The company notes on its website that a part of its recipe for success involves not doing business on Sundays.

"Our founder, Truett Cathy, made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened his first restaurant in Hapeville, Georgia. He has often shared that his decision was as much practical as spiritual," said the company. "He believes that all franchised Chick-fil-A operators and their restaurant employees should have an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and worship if they choose to do so. That's why all Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed on Sundays. It's part of our recipe for success."

A representative from the company told the AP that Chick-fil-A was "deeply grateful" for its loyal customers. They also intend on expanding into new markets.

Rick Maynard, a KFC spokesman, said, the chain "has seen a lot of competitors come and go since 1952," when it first opened.

"Colonel Sanders wasn't afraid of a little competition then, and we still welcome it today," he said.

Chick-fil-A has thrived despite efforts from LGBT activists who attempted to boycott the franchise over comments made by the company's president, Dan Cathy, supporting traditional marriage.

By contrast to KFC, every time I go to Chick Fil A, I leave wondering ‘how the hell does their chicken sandwich taste that good!’

It’s actually chicken breast instead of rendered sludge, probably. Then there’s the canola oil used elsewhere, I think it lacks a good flavor and has a bitter aftertaste.

Does CFA serve only chicken sandwiches, or also pieces of cooked chicken (breasts/thighs/drumsticks) like KFC?

****************

The closest thing you’ll find to a piece of chicken is their strips or nuggets.
The rest is in a salad or sandwich, etc. Now a major difference from other
chicken places is CFA uses on breast meat thus somewhat higher prices.

Chick-fil-A gave all three of my daughters the opportunity for their first job. Daughter #1 got the full training regimen and all her references called. Daughter #2 got the training, but no references called. Daughter #3 didn't even get an interview. They just asked when she could start.

All three have, of course, gone on to bigger and better things. But CFA is the first choice of three generations now . . . the grand kids are even bigger fans than the parents and grandparents.

We have a KFC and CFA right down the road from us. I don’t patronize either. I drive a little bit further to El Pollo Loco. Best chicken around.

Have you tried El Pollo Loco? I see there is one in Seattle. Best chicken around in my opinion. They serve full/real pieces of chicken and they have specials all the time for family meals like KFC. Their sides are really good too. Their green sauce to dip the chicken in is to die for.
Know what I am having for dinner now. Lol

I agree, it's pretty good, the flavoring is excellent. Unfortunately, the two locations near me are in seedy locations. Lots of low-lifes outside but pleasant workers inside. I wish they would build a CFA near me, closest one almost an hour away. I go to CFA when visiting Texas and it's great.

Chick-Fil-A is quite different than KFC. KFC specializes in fried chicken and mainly serves chicken pieces but also has sandwiches, whereas Chick-Fil-A serves mainly sandwiches and salads, and specializes in grilled chicken.

KFC is closer to Brown's and Popeye's with their menu. Chick-Fil-A is like the chicken version of Arby's, but much better.

RE: Is KFC pro-LGBT?

KFC is owned by Pepsico.

PepsiCo Receives Perfect Score in the 2014 Corporate Equality Index

http://www.pepsico.com/Story/PepsiCo-Receives-Perfect-Score-in-the-2014-Corporate-Equality-Index120920131252.html

EXCERPT:

PepsiCo received a perfect 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s (HRCF) 2014 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmark survey of corporate policies and practices related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workplace equality.

The HRCF is the educational arm of the Human Rights Campaign, an organization working to achieve equality for LGBT citizens.

The 100 percent CEI score earned PepsiCo the HRCF designation as one of the “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality.”

“It all starts with our Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi, who strongly values diversity and inclusion,” said Jim Wilkinson, PepsiCo executive vice president, Communications, and executive sponsor of EQUAL, PepsiCo’s LGBT employee resource group.

“PepsiCo follows a basic formula for doing business: respect others and win together. Including the presence and contributions of LGBT employees in our company and around the world, we have a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities in which we do business,” he said. “We strive for perfection in everything we do, and it is particularly gratifying for PepsiCo to have achieved another 100-percent rating in HRCF’s Corporate Equality Index.”

PepsiCo has been at the forefront of promoting diversity and inclusion for decades, said Wilkinson.

Bush’s chicken is light years better than KFC.

We usually stop at Bush's Chicken when we are shopping. One day I noticed the black manager throwing away some chicken breasts and asked if I could take those pieces home to our dog.

He gave me five breasts that were perfectly OK. Dog got one and we ate the others after removing the skins.

We love their Managers' Special. Three or four chicken strips, gravy, mashed potatoes, French fries, cup of tea and a biscuit for $5.00 plus tax.

There's going to be. CFA is opening in Tacoma in Spring 2015. Long time to wait, I know.
