Weird. I was guarding an armory and hauling tractor trailer loads of weaponry. Me, my shotgun and the MP’s were all fully geared up. Of course the Army never was very rational. :-}
Ya’ll had artillery, We, at Ft. Knox, had tanks. (You’re welcome)
That explains it, you were detached to the MPs, the MPs are always armed.
My father served during the Korean War. His father died when he was 13 and he has the sole bread winner, hence never was assigned overseas. He use to ride shotgun in the truck on ammo runs (in the Washington DC area) with a loaded 45 pistol. Once he threatened the driver with it, the driver had “a date with a hot tomato” and was in a hurry.
Such sounds like a 1,000 years ago now.

Reminds me of a friend that was making a delivery to a military base years ago.
He was driving a 22 foot straight truck, and was stopped at the gate, very normal. He told the guard and showed his invoice, that his was making a delivery. The guard asked “Are you carrying any Drugs, alcohol or weapons?” My friend replied in a very surprised tone “Hell, I’ve got all that”.
They laughed and let him make his delivery.
Those were different times.
A time when someone was allowed to profile someone based on a little common sense.
