This article comes from FirstLook.org by Glenn Greenwald One of the many pressing stories that remains to be told from the Snowden archive is how western intelligence agencies are attempting to manipulate and control online discourse with extreme tactics of deception and reputation-destruction. Its time to tell a chunk of that story, complete with the relevant documents. Over the last several weeks, I worked with NBC News to publish a series of articles about dirty trick tactics used by GCHQs previously secret unit, JTRIG (Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group). These were based on four classified GCHQ documents presented to the NSA and the other three partners in the English-speaking Five Eyes alliance. Today, we at the Intercept are publishing another new JTRIG document, in full, entitled The Art of Deception: Training for Online Covert Operations. By publishing these stories one by one, our NBC reporting highlighted some of the key, discrete revelations: the monitoring of YouTube and Blogger, the targeting of Anonymous with the very same DDoS attacks they accuse hacktivists of using, the use of honey traps (luring people into compromising situations using sex) and destructive viruses. But, here, I want to focus and elaborate on the overarching point revealed by all of these documents: namely, that these agencies are attempting to control, infiltrate, manipulate, and warp online discourse, and in doing so, are compromising the integrity of the internet itself. Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable. To see how extremist these programs are, just consider the tactics they boast of using to achieve those ends: false flag operations (posting material to the internet and falsely attributing it to someone else), fake victim blog posts (pretending to be a victim of the individual whose reputation they want to destroy), and posting negative information on various forums. Here is one illustrative list of tactics from the latest GCHQ document were publishing today: Other tactics aimed at individuals are listed here, under the revealing title discredit a target: |

“working with NBC....” is a red flag for me. This may be authentic but I now need to be shown more.
I’m a big fan of Rummel. The Left doesn’t like facing up to his reality.
Just like when the Clinton left office?
Have not will
Breitbart Hasting Brown you can name the others! Hit high profile targets to make examples is the communist way !
Well, I think on the U.N., for one. They’ve always wanted us out if the U.N., who are a bunch of morally bankrupt, ineffectual hypocrites.
I an not covert!
Yes, they have research and psyops and paid employees to mess with the internet 24/7 - but we can counter... We outnumber them. Wasn't it the 'Clinton war room boys' that started this? Too bad no one's willing to ask George Stephanopoulos about it... I'm sure he'd have some insights. Maybe O'Reilly or Hannity could ask...
The Gentleman's Guide To Forum Spies
Inject all sorts of false material onto the news in order to destroy the reputation of its targets.
Isn’t that the job of network and cable news?.
I remember when the Klowne Posse was active here. There are still posters here who follow their playbook.
Alex’s schtick has always been making histrionic claims from the most tenuous links.
His Austin cable tv show was a hoot. Alex himself is a pugnacious jackass.
Doesn’t mean that even he isn’t right on occasion. Some have even suggested that folks like Alex get fed info JUST to give the info a “taint” of conspiracy nutjobbery.
“I remember when the Klowne Posse was active here. There are still posters here who follow their playbook.”

There are certainty operatives of the GOPe ruling elite active here. They try to disguise that but betray it by their attempts to, with as much subtlety as possible, spread FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) among supporters of Tea Party primary challengers of incumbent Congressional RINOs.
They also so whatever they can to undermine Senator Ted Cruz.
A few more people have ‘caught on’ to the ways of liberal elites since Clinton. It’s going to be a slow process to get our country back... but we’ve got to start somewhere...
Which of course classes him in the 'useful idiots' wing..
One of my email contacts apparently subscribes to Alex Jones stuff (all flavors) and floods my inbox with it from four different email addresses. I have my filters set to funnel all of his stuff into one folder which I look at once in a while. As soon as I see any of those 'keywords' (AJ, Infowars, PPlanet...) I delete without even opening. Even some of the stuff he finds from sources other than AJ is late. I already saw it here on FR like three days before he found it.. ;-)
Alex himself is a pugnacious jackass.
Interesting.. That was my opinion after watching as much as I could stand of his bit with Pierced Moron...
I had one occasion to meet him. Gun control counter protest in Austin. Was not impressed.
I also worked with someone who knocked him out in a bar fight back in the late ‘90s...
Doesn't seem to have instilled any useful learning experiences, eh?
When dealing with kinetic cognitive realignment therapy, repeated small doses work better than one large dose...
