(CNN) -- It's been eight years since a black exotic dancer in Durham, North Carolina, accused three white Duke University lacrosse players of rape, sexual assault and kidnapping at a party. Whether you believe justice was adequately served -- without a trial, the North Carolina attorney general unilaterally declared the indicted players innocent -- one fact remains indisputable: A whole lot of underage drinking of beer and Jack Daniels was going on throughout much of that March day, badly impairing the judgment of the more than 40 man-boys in attendance.
According to a June 2006 study by Aaron White, then an assistant professor at the Duke University Medical Center, about 40% of college freshmen admitted they engaged in binge drinking: five or more drinks on one occasion. Some 20% of college freshmen admitted they drank even more: between 10 and 15 drinks per drinking session.

A quote from the author, “in the United States, the 0.08% threshold should be abandoned in favor of zero tolerance. Anyone caught driving with any amount of alcohol in their bloodstream should have his or her driving privileges suspended for at least three years.”
Who the hell does he think he is appealing to anyway? Just threw up some glarb on CNN's blog site expecting applause. GTFO.

Personally I think the drinking age should drop to 16, the BAL increased to 1.2.

Personally, I would rather raise the drinking age to 40. Maybe by then people would learn to drink responsibly.
On the other hand, there are some people who just never grow up.
Do not even PRETEND that any Duke players raped ANYONE in this case. The writer is a liberal, probably a feminist.
And voting raised to 29.
I have no problem with lowering the drinking age. I just fail to see how anything would have been different if these man-boys had been drinking legally.
As with the Soviet Union, our people should stupefy themselves with alcohol and — in our case — legal marijuana. Then perhaps we won’t realize that we are slaves of the state.
Do away with “drinking age” entirely. An age for purchase, but nothing else.
that struck me too. The reason for no trial was the utter lack of evidence.
And, why in the sam hill is he bringing up this case regarding the issue of lowering the drinking age? The legal drinking age has nothing to do with this case at all.
I’d leave the drinking age at 21, but raise the voting age to at least 21, just to be “fair”.
Yes, mr. Cohan, the NC AG declared the young men innocent because THEY WERE. The prosecutor who tried to frame them by hiding exculpatory evidence for political purposes was the guilty party here.
Don’t try to lie about it Cohan you schmuck.
There should be two licenses-—one to drink and one to drive.
If you want to drink below age 21, you cannot get a driver’s license nor get take-out. You can drink in a restaurant or a bar, but no “to go,” so anyone with a “drinking license” can’t buy liquor for his unlicensed friends. If you want a driver’s license under 21, you cannot get a drinking license.
Problem solved.
AMEN, brother. We’ve lost too many people to drunk drivers or drunk driving. My son had to bury two of his best girl friends who killed themselves by drunk driving. It hit him harder than having to look at dead enemy soldiers in Iraq.
They died for nothing.
I’m for both responsible drinking and responsible driving. They are not excusionary, at least not to a sane person.
He cannot, however, go into a place serving alcohol and order a beer or go into a casino nd pull a handle.

How would they learn without violating law?
Pick age. Less than that you are a minor. Above that you are an adult. We can talk about what that age should be. But you turn that age and you are handed the whole package.
The ‘drinking age’ should be 18. You’re either a legal adult at that age, or you’re not.
Having said that, I’ve often thought that the legal age to vote should be at least 30-35. One can do a hell of alot more damages to themselves and others at a ballot box than they can with a bottle of beer.
Or, before casting a ballot you have to take a short quiz on ‘civil intelligence’ - as in, Who is your Congressmen? Senators?..ect. Miss two questions, and you can still vote, but it isn’t counted. Could also apply a simpler test. One must net PAY taxes(not counting Social Security or Medicare contributions) before you can vote. When registering, you must show up with the previous year’s income tax forms, or from a year when taxes were net paid.
