Pro-Russian demonstrators in eastern Ukraine smashed their way into public buildings and burned Ukrainian-language books on Sunday in further protests following two deadly clashes in the region last week.

Protests, some several thousand strong, spread to Russian-speaking southern districts as Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, under the control of the Russian military for two weeks, voted in a referendum on joining Russia.

[...]

In Kharkiv, Reuters Television footage showed pro-Russian activists scaling an iron gate, smashing a van and breaking into the offices of a Ukrainian cultural center. Two policemen stood nearby, examining the van.

The footage then showed young men seizing Ukrainian-language books, including a volume devoted to the 1932-1933 man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine, which killed from 7-10 million people.

"Do you see what they print here?" one activist said to another.

The activists then took the books into the street and set them alight in small bonfires...

Most of the world has repeatedly proven it cannot govern itself

+1. The beginning of wisdom.

Wilson's progressivism has caused 100 years of bloodshed which, at it's peaks consumed 100 million human lives.

How much trouble did the Arabs cause when the Sultan was around to kick ass?

All of the work that he, Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II to end communism looks like it was all in vain because there are no world leaders today who have the strength and determination to stand up to the Russian bear. Obama, Cameron, and Pope Francis can’t hold a candle to their predecessors. The Gipper, Maggie, and JP II were a major league all star team on the world stage. The people we have today are little league at best, and it’s a sad day when the free world has to admit the strongest leader is a former KGB office and a bonafide, card carrying communist.

This is the kind of Crisis that should have been resolved through Diplomacy before it even happened.

Step one of that Diplomacy is not have a Pill Pedaling Homo President working against the U.S.A's best interests.

Now their is next to nothing we can go.

We should have (and still should) do what Sarah Palin said and that is Drill our our own Fossil Fuels. That will give us much needed cash and help undercut the Russian's Enormous Profits they are getting.

But as you said Norm, we won't because no one thinks.

And Barry had lots of help. There are a lot of psychotics in the GOP that back his adventures in foreign policy who flatly refuse to fight him and Sierra/Greenpeace on energy issues here at home.

Lesser evils my Lilly white arse.

Very bad move on Putin’s part. This is going wind up being a shooting war. It may play well with the Rusky nationalists but not with the satelites and once the nationalists he’s using to clain he wants to re-capture their “lost territory” figure out it’s all about the money and who is getting it and they ain’t. Putin and Russia will lose big time. Meantime millions killed .

We can’t see exactly what was burned. I see reports that these were not books, but Right Sector (fascist party) leaflets found in the building. No way to verify, however.

Well there’s lots of liberal elitists that are hoping to see more than mere millions gone for enviro/economic reasons. And there are lots of liberal elitists that don’t like getting their own hands dirty. Often the same people actually. Oh...and they are holding the reins of power in several nuclear armed countries.

And before anyone screams “Tinfoil!” as yourselves if you would trust your family’s life to the possibility it is ‘tinfoil’.

I don’t think Putin is stupid enough to directly threaten NATO states.

I'm afraid he is. Putin perfectly knows that only a few nuclear explosions all over Europe and USA will shake the foundations of the western alliance strong enough to sign a truce on any conditions to avoid any further destruction. As a result, he will keep the former Warsaw Pact countries to the cheers and sigh of relief of the western world that the war nightmare is over.

People in the West seem to suffer from a strange kind of paranoid. They seem to think that before 1990 it was a bad evil empire that threatened the world, while now, it is a democratic Russia which got rid of her gruesome Soviet past, just as if the 70 years of marxist brain washing, all that anti American and anti Western imperial indoctrination of conquering the world suddenly disappeared from millions of brains with no trace? Sorry, no offense intended. This is blindness and gullibility I cannot comprehend.

So, I don't believe any western promises and I'm expecting the worst. Anyway, I still hope the West will wake up in time before the Russian Bear awakes it with a nuclear kick.

I'm sorry to say that but the spirit of Chamberlain seems to be still alive and kicking in the western world.

How are the Poles reacting? Frankly, I’d have their troops poised to move into Western Ukraine if the Russians threaten that region. Poland may have to take the lead, because the US sure won’t do it, at least under this Administration.

Then there is the little matter of Kaliningrad.

I pray it doesn’t come to that.

“...and burned Ukrainian-language books on Sunday.”

I think it is more a case of erasing the Ukrainian language. I watched some long history on youtube and time and again the Ukrainians were striving to write, perform, etc. in their own language. It would grab hold for awhile, and then others (Nazis & Commies) would ban the language.

As that guy says: “language, culture, borders”.

The Russians get it. Liberals don’t.

“History is being erased.”

History is being _repeated_.

And with flair: “The footage then showed young men seizing Ukrainian-language books, including a volume devoted to the 1932-1933 man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine, which killed from 7-10 million people. ‘Do you see what they print here?’ one activist said to another. The Soviets and now the Putinists long ago transplanted ethnic Russians into conquered areas as colonists in order to establish a firm base of support against the Captive Nations ethnics.

Looks like Putin stepped up the infiltration and the “irredentist” movement because he saw that Obama, Biden, Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry was weaklings and surrender monkeys (Libya/Benghazi, Syria, Nigeria, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, No. Korea, Venezuela, etc).

This is nothing but a Soviet/Russian “ethnic cleansing”, again, of the Ukraine. No wonder so many Ukrainians greeted the German Army as an army of liberation, after having lost 7-10 million people in the communist-created famines of the 1930’s.

However, I’m willing to bet that you never heard of or read the “Brezhnev Doctrine” of the Soviet Union in the 1960’s, the pretext for the “reinvasion” of Czechslovakia” during the “Velvet Revolution” of 1968.

Simply put, Brezhnev said that what ever country was a member of the Soviet Bloc, (i.e. Cuba specifically), would come under the Soviet Bloc military umbrella and would automatically get Soviet military support in case of revolution or invasion.

Putin is just revising this doctrine into the old Hitlerian one of “Ethnic Protection Doctrine” meaning that Russia has the right to militarily intervene in any European country that has a Russian population which claims to be persecuted/oppressed.

Next on the list: Romania, Hungary, Poland, Baltic States, and maybe even parts of Germany and the old Czechoslovakia.

“What’cha gonna do when they come for you, bad boys”?

I’m talking to about ten people from the Ukraine at this time, and none of them share you idiotic take on this.

What the hell is wrong with you? You think it is okay for Russia to march in and take over other sovereign nation’s territory? Really?

Well then I guess Mexico should just march into Texas too and annex it, since you think that’s a swell idea over in the Ukraine.
