The Casinos: “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye”

When I heard that on Boss Radio 93 KHJ, I thought it sounded more like a song from 1957 than one from 1967.

It was definitely a throwback. Go and dig up “The Language of Love”, the only hit that John Loudermilk actually sang.

ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 15, 1967

A NEAR MISS – The Will-o-Bees: “Shades of Gray”

When I covered the songbook of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil of the Brill Building, I brought this up as an example of a song written for one purpose that ended up serving a different purpose. Its first treatment was folk-rock and didn’t push the plaintiveness of the lyrics; it wasn’t a lament. This first version got some air play but didn’t score. Then the Monkees recorded it and made it sound rather sad. Barry and Cynthia didn’t mind because they rang the cash register anyway, but this is what the songwriters originally intended.

I post the following by request of my 11-year-old son.

One evening, I played as bunch of Irish music for my kids. They all enjoyed it immensely. However, there were a few songs my kids really enjoyed. One of them was the following...

The Orange and the Green-Irish Rovers

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
