Boy Suspended for Pointing Finger Like Gun
Newser ^ | 3/4/14 | Kate Seamons

Posted on 03/04/2014 8:26:45 AM PST by Impala64ssa

America's kids have been suspended for pretending that pencils were guns, but an Ohio school may have topped that. A 10-year-old student at a Columbus elementary school was handed a three-day suspension for making a finger gun and pretending to shoot a classmate. The suspension letter more formally referred to his weapon as a "level 2 lookalike firearm," reports the Columbus Dispatch. Devonshire Alternative Elementary School's principal says students have been frequently told not to play pretend gun games, with a district rep saying kids were warned consequences would follow.

Those consequences hit hard last week for fifth-grader Nathan Entingh, who says he was "just playing around"; the rep said Nathan pretended to shoot another student "kind of execution style" in the head. And the "victim" didn't even see the mock execution, which was instead spotted by a teacher. Nathan's dad seems dumbfounded: "It would even make more sense maybe if he brought a plastic gun that looked like a real gun or something, but it was his finger." (Almost exactly a year ago, a Georgia teacher was suspended over a finger gun of his own.)

Since Poony Poon was in the contest, Name of the Year quit allowing nicknames. I don't know if her given first name is Poony, although the NYT called her that at age 10.

I can find a Tiffany Poon, an acclaimed pianist from Juliard who fits Poony's current age range, on her YouTube channel. Tiffany Poon has performed internationally, according to her website.

The pictures of her at 11 and 13 resemble the 10-year-old girl in the article.

I had always imagined “null and void” as somewhat incorporeal.

"I had always imagined “null and void” as somewhat incorporeal."

There are advantages and disadvantages to being incorporeal.

You’re certainly not here: I would notice. Even if you only nearly here, the catz would notice.

Hi.

You’re certainly not here: I would notice. Even if you only nearly here, the catz would notice.

I'm incorporeal, so nobody can see me either.

And don't post to me because you didn't see this post.

Yes, but you wouldn’t necessarily notice the catz noticing...

Oh, yes - they stare and comment about things they notice. “Mao!” Jake exclaims. “Errr, nyik nar ...,” Shannon agrees.

Tiffany Poon is an extremely good pianist! Just a little heavy on her dynamics, perhaps, but I haven’t listened to enough different pieces to say for sure.

I'm usually very quiet. My wife forgets that I live here.

This is Tiffany’s debut recital, when she was 10 (and apparently known as “Poony” to her classmates).

The writer “Spengler” thinks that the proliferation of classical pianists from China has global socioeconomic implications, but I’m dubious.

I’d notice when I tried to sit down, probably. Everyone thinks they can have my place on the sofa, just because I’m not in it.

Would you agree, then, that Chillie Poon is not even the best Poon to appear in the Name of the Year contest?

If Poony Poon didn’t win, there’s no way I’m voting for Chillie Poon.

It’s Shamus Beaglehole all the way. The name sounds even better if you shout it with an English accent as a means of effusively showing appreciation at the end of a Poony Poon performance.

I’m dubious.

Am proud of you T-c. You are following the correct path (imho).

Comments on Youtube and elsewhere suggest that Tiffany Poon is among a handful of the most gifted and accomplished young pianists in the U.S./Europe. I’m now listening to her high school graduation recital, Feb. 15, 2014, and her dynamics are much more subtle than on some of the earlier performances.

It’s amazing that I’m listening to her because she was mentioned in an article as “Poony Poon,” which is, I think, a slightly sillier name than “Chillie Poon.” Vote for Shamus.

Thank you. A well-wrought theory is nice, but I like long-term studies before I’m ready to buy.

I would have guesses a lower weight than what you told me last night

And you are still a good man

Don’t care what anyone says about you.

They would be self serve g jerk, to malign or marginalized youjust so they could overlook their own short comings, which are probably. And obvious.deep

It doesn’t matter to me what nully weighs. A heavy weight contrasts with “void,” though, unless he’s in outer space.

Oh, wait ...
