At homes listed for sale this spring, a prospective buyer may notice the manicured lawn, the pot of flowers by the walkway, and possibly the states official no guns sign posted by the front door.
Realty firms, like other businesses, are grappling with how to handle the states new concealed carry law. But in an industry whose very foundation involves strangers sitting in agents cars and offices and walking through private homes, devising guidelines is proving difficult.
Late last week, just as the state was mailing out the first 5,000 concealed carry licenses, the Illinois Association of Realtors unveiled a consent form that could take the conversation between real estate agents and home sellers into uncharted territory.
The form, if realty firms and agents choose to use it, allows homeowners to specify whether they would allow a potential buyer with a concealed firearm inside their property.
If the seller says no, an agent would display the state-authorized sign, a drawing of a black gun with a red circle and line through it, outside the home during all showings and open houses.

Insane. It’s always about “feeling good”.
A criminal will bring in the gun, hold up the agent and take the valuables.
The law abiding citizen is there to consider purchasing the home.
Tell the gun carrying law abiding citizen he can’t come in with his gun and you’ve lost his business. Period.
But of course, Illinois is a special kind of stupid.
Talk about straining at a gnat. The day I toured a rent house I was considering buying was the first day of legal open carry in OK and I was taking advantage of it. The agent didn’t even say a word or bat an eye, so far as I can tell. He remained a professional and we did the deal.
Of course I support a home-owner’s right to control what happens in their home but when you open your home to people, you lose a lot of autonomy.
Seriously? Are people putting signs on their own houses advertising that they have no guns? Thomas Sowell makes the distinction between two-stage thinkers and one-stage thinkers. These are definitely one-stage thinkers. The second stage is gonna be a heck of a surprise to them.
It’s another ‘small step’ along the way in the banning, and ultimate confiscation, of firearms and, our freedom-of-choice. Restaurants, bars and other businesses routinely do it; now residential rentals and leasing are doing it. Some places also ban smoking, indoors and outside. What’s next? Banning of garlic and onions in cooking?
Thomas Sowell is a three stage thinker - he is like the Chuck Norris of thinking.
More gun laws to fix problems that don’t exist.
Heh. I would think this would be an argument FOR concealed carry.
Book mark
Haha, YES!!! There it is! The offishul state sign.
Idiots.
Concealed means concealed. I carry everywhere I go and nobody is the wiser.
I’m a Realtor. I can tell you 1st hand that many people will not buy a home from their political opposite. I’ve shown homes to libs that had conservative books etc and they don’t buy.
I’ve shown homes to conservatives who see “My Life” by Bill Clinton on the shelf and they don’t buy. This silly ass piece of bologna will hurt the industry there.
The libs are the ones that bring it up. “Oh. Some right wingers live here”. Conservatives usually keep it to themselves but I can tell.
Though it certainly would give the buyer an advantage.
The seller is advertising his utter stupidity with that sign.
It really would be best if we could live apart from each other, but the libs would never allow that.
And yet, I bet if a prospective liberal buyer were told that said conservative homeowner would not agree to selling their home to a liberal, the liberal would sue to make them sell it to them. We have come to this...irreconcilable differences.
A 2 state solution so to speak.
Simple, isn’t it?
