Gov. Jan Brewer on Wednesday vetoed a Republican bill that set off a national debate over gay rights, religion and discrimination and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.
Brewer's decision defused a national furor over gay rights and religious freedom.
The bill backed by Republicans in the Legislature was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays. But opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination.
The bill thrust Arizona into the national spotlight last week after both chambers of the state legislature approved it. As the days passed, more and more groups, politicians and average citizens weighed in against Senate Bill 1062. Many took to social media to criticize the bill, calling it an attack on gay and lesbian rights.

I supported a challenge to her because she hiked taxes. I’m not even mad at her, the whole damn planet browbeat her, that’s just the world today. Clearly she’s no Maggie Thatcher.
I figured she would veto as soon as I learned of this hoopla. Rarely does someone dicker and then do the right thing. Like I said, the moment it came across my desk it would be signed. Some things I would marinate on, not this. Protesters I would tell to screw off and corporations I would tell to KMA. (I am unelectable ;))
Agree with everything SOL said, we’ve been over that, we lost the “aunt fancy/miss nancy” issue due to ineffective opposition. Guns v. water pistols is a great analogy. But not perfect because water gets you wet. More like guns versus laser gun toys that light up and make a little sound.
Not optimistic we can turn it around, but here’s to hoping (got to start shooting bullets though, and yes reading lib trolls, I mean that figuratively). Maybe they can try again with a better written bill? I don’t know.
I guess she really wants her Super Gay Bowl.
No, because political notions/affiliations and racial/racist views aren’t currently protected categories under civil rights laws—certainly no such laws I’m aware of. Race, color, national origin, and religion are under Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (the public accommodations part applying to bakeries, restaurants, stores, movie theaters, etc). Your hypothetical black baker could refuse to bake a cake for a Klansman just fine. If he refused to bake cakes for white customers generically, though, he’d be open to a federal lawsuit.
95 PERCENT OF REPUBLICAN ELECTED OFFICIALS EITHER FAKE CONSERVATISM OR REPUDIATE IT.....
Its way past time for a thorough cleansing in GOP primaries or a third party-write-in option for general elections if the first option fails.....
That’s a good idea. If a same sex couple comes in requesting a cake or photography for their wedding, tell them up front that it is against your religious convictions. However, then tell them since the law is forcing them to provide the service, 100% of the proceeds will go to a traditional marriage support group.
The politicians care more about not being portrayed as a bully in the MSM and on social media (even if it’s not true), than they do standing by their beliefs.
This is ridiculous. This is involuntary servitude. And this is evil. I hope to see systematic civil disobedience, noncompliance, and jury nullification.
I made it quite clear that religious people would not do this.
If you were to read gay blogs, you would see that openly praying would just bring another law suit since they react like Dracula to garlic when confronted by prayer. Same with biblical scriptures on cakes.
That’s the best idea I’ve read yet.
I assume, at this point, that all leftists are faggots or dykes. All of them. Some may occasionally engage in natural intercourse as well, but I have to assume that ALL LEFTISTS ARE SODOMITES. They certainly act that way.
Allowed???
Looks to me like the sodomites in Big Media deliberately went out of their way to label it the anti-gay bill.
That was actually a smack at Fox News for following along with the alphabets
Whatever happened to the Muslim cab drivers, was it in Minnesota? The ones who refused to transport guide dogs? I’m sure they’ve been ordered to follow the law. I would think the ACLU would be picketing this one, people with disabilities being refused service? Isn’t that illegal?
I hear you loud and clear!
Some people are just Stuck On Stupid.
that is a fantastic idea of a way to deal with it.
Politics are filthy; the filth Obama has pushed things to their worst point. Maybe the people in the Ukraine have the right idea. These politicians are all whores going to the highest bidders.
Einsatzgruppen.
you know....she could have just done nothing and it would have passed and her turd burgling friends would have not have gotten upset with her. now the majority of the state hates what she did....
and she is a lame duck. so the people of AZ is not to blame and her term left is short ending after this year...
Jan has sided with the religion of sexual deviance. Thanks Jan, you succumbed to the bully in the pervert’s closet. Male homosexuals have their places of worship too, but most people forget—they worship in filthy public restrooms, in bathhouses, and in organization populated by young boys. Coprophilia is no virtue nor is it a right.
