SYDNEY, Australia IT was 2 a.m., just a few days before Christmas, in a remote part of Afghanistan. Eight hours into a 16-hour shift, Ryan, a 23-year-old American naval sailor, was standing tense and alert, watching the footage of soldiers undertaking a nearby mission on a screen in front of him.
Suddenly, a hand clapped onto his back. Wheeling around to look at the face of his senior officer, Ryan knew the moment he had feared had come: His superiors had found out that his enlisted paperwork described him as female. Within three hours, he was on a plane.
Ryan, who is now stationed on a base in the United States awaiting a potential discharge, recently described that day to me. Ryan is the name his mother would have given him if he had been identified as male at birth. He does not want to reveal his real name because his case is being processed by the military.
While the repeal of dont ask, dont tell in 2011 meant gays and lesbians could serve openly in the American military, transgender people still cannot, because the military defines gender nonconformity as a psychological disorder. So transgender soldiers serve in silence, facing dismissal if exposed.

A naval sailor? Huh?
Im confused by the comments...
was this person born with male parts or female parts ???
You nailed it. I spent 7 years active duty in the Army. I met gay and lesbian soldiers who did their jobs better than me! Their sexuality was not an issue, they were good soldiers, period. Now it has gotten so messed up.
Gay and lesbian soldiers have been serving their country with honor forever. The people who are incapable of controlling their sexual desire have always failed within the military.
It's always good when psychological disorders are defined as psychological disorders.
It's always good when psychological disorders are defined as psychological disorders.
That’s not important. What is important is how they “feel” about themselves.
For example, if I man who feels like he is a lesbian trapped inside a man’s body, you have to understand that. I would be a “Man/Woman” and you’d have to address me as “Sir/Ma’am.” See? And you better not accent or emphasize one title over the other either, Bub.
If I were to suddenly decide that I simply am a man you better know that and address me simply as “Sir” and if you don’t I’ll have your ass. If I suddenly decide I am a pre-woman you better know that too and address me as “Ma’am” or I’ll have your ass there as well.
Shoot a rifle? Know a bayonet from a banjo? Not in this Man/Woman’s Army, no Sir/Ma’am. These days it’s all about political correctness, Muslim outreach, and, social engineering.
The McCain's, Grahamnesties and Bushies (with Obama) want to take over the Muslim countries with a bunch of queers in dresses as US soldiers?
No wonder they think we are bringing hell to the earth. That makes it easier to convince young muzzies to put on those suicide packs.
The problem is that the god of the land is fedzilla. People gave the beast the power to create and enforce lies as truth ("transgender", homo "marriage" and other depraved oxymorons).
What do you figure will be the decibels of wailing when those who embrace these lies realize that this same beast.gov has also redefined "health care"? They'll be pounding on the gates back to Realityville in a futile attempt to escape the Obamacare reaper.
Okay, I’m confused. I always am with these trans-whatever stories.
“His superiors had found out that his enlisted paperwork described him as female”
So, is this a dude who thinks he’s a woman, or a woman passing himself off as a dude? I’m assuming it’s the first scenario?
What a mess.
I don’t even want to read this article.
Well I heard that in Iran men caught being gay get to choose between death and a sex change operation (believe it or not Iran is #2 in the world in number of sex change operations behind Thailand) and that Afghan warlords have a thing for dressing up little boys like girls, so maybe it’s actually a great idea!
No, Not at all.
Well at least in my day the girls looked like girls and had a thing for guys that looked like guys anyway.
Born with a uterus.
No, this isn’t satire — this is the Left’s actuality.
Yeah, their blatant unwanted sexual advances towards the normal people is very brave. Ugh. May the Times go bankrupt.
When courage is used to describe a mental issue
Trans-genders are very disturbed people——if psycho-analysts knew anything about religion-—they would recognize this as a form of satanic possession.
I was in the navy for 21 years. I think that about 90% of sailors and marines, I know, disagree with transgender service members.
Oh, crap. Here we go again.
And the race is on to see if Barry can further defile the greatest military on earth with this social experiment bull$hit before he is escorted out of office, a moment that cannot come too soon.
