Linking increased fuel economy to the larger issue of economic growth, President Obama on Tuesday directed his administration to write new rules to improve mileage for the nations big-rig trucks.
Mr. Obama made the announcement during a speech at a suburban Maryland Safeway distribution center and cast it as the latest move in his so-called year of action, a time hell act without Congress wherever possible.
Improving gas mileage for these trucks is going to drive down our oil imports even further, Mr. Obama said. That reduces carbon pollution even more, cuts down on businesses fuel costs, which should pay off in lower prices for consumers. So its not just a win-win. Its a win-win-win.
The president added, The economy is growing. Were creating jobs. Were generating more clean energy. Were cutting our dependence on foreign oil. Were pumping out less dangerous carbon pollution. If we keep going down this road then were going to have a future full of good-paying jobs.
Under current federal standards, medium and heavy-duty trucks must reduce their fuel consumption by 10 percent to 20 percent by 2018. The presidents new proposal which wont be finalized until 2016 will set even more ambitious goals the trucking industry much achieve in the years after 2018.

How about new mileage standards for Air Force One?
Think of how much CO2 we'll prevent and there won't be any more of those nasty diesel fumes!
How quickly would I hear a loud knock on my door if I suggested that this problem could be solved by ‘Dark Energy’ so long as the vehicle was built with ‘Dark Matter’?

BHO is a dolt. May God have mercy and deliver this nation.
Take Ethanol out of gasoline. We would all be getting better mileage.
The biggest gains recently have been in “automated” computer controlled transmissions , aerodynamic aids (under the trailer), superwide single tires to replace tandems and driver comfort systems that don’t require the engine to idle.
I used to get 7.2==>7.5 mpg with a 425hp cat/9spd Peterbilt...
A “locomotive” powertrain ,, big electric motors with a mid sized diesel generator would save fuel ... can it be done without adding too much weight?
If projected across the fleet, the rule is likely already behind the times and is for getting his base into ass kissing with glee mode.
The natrual gas for big rigs is deployed all across the country interstates
Why doesn't he just decree that all roads shall go downhill to cut fuel consumption?
I think he just did that with the “healthcare” thingee....
Democrat Donor Warren Buffet owns trains. I can see why Democrats want to harm truckers.
Mileage dropped every time we reduced sulfur content.
Mileage further dropped on the low emission laws due to having multiple injections of fuel during each engine cycle. I know there are engines running a pre-injection, the normal power one, and then one during the exhaust cycle.
Winters have been getting cooler past 20 years, with more snowfall
