As might be expected, the trappings of Monarchy rushed in to fill the resulting vacuum. You now have an ersatz monarchy, without the historical traditions underpinning a true monarchy.

While the office of President (in both France and the USA) has become increasingly powerful, the British monarchy has evolved to become largely symbolic. The monarch in the 16 nations of the Realm is the Head of State — a living symbol of the nation. The respective Prime Ministers are “Heads of Government”, and are treated as just another politician (or as “the first among equals”). There is no “First Lady”, or “First Dude”.
