Iran is assisting key Al-Qaeda figures to transfer Sunni fighters into Syria, the Obama administration charged Thursday.
The accusation, detailed in new sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury department targeting Iranian terror links, indicates Iranian officials are backing opposing sides in the Syrian civil war.
Olimzhon Adkhamovich Sadikov, described by the Treasury Department as an Iran-based Islamic Jihad Union facilitator who operates there with the knowledge of Iranian authorities, was designated for providing logistical support and funding to Al-Qaedas Iran-based network.

Sadikov, also known as Jafar al-Uzbeki and Jafar Muidinov, serves as a key extremist smuggler based in Mashhad, Iran, near the country's border with Afghanistan, and has provided visas and passports to numerous foreign fighters, including Al-Qaeda recruits, to facilitate their travel," the Treasury said, adding that he assisted extremists and operatives transiting Iran on their way into and out of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Treasury said.

Well then, looks like Iran and the United States do have something in common, after all.
That would have Iran supporting both sides in the civil war among the insurgents, both Hezbollah and AlQ as well as Assad. Curious.

This administration needs to get their lies straight.
That’s correct
Our government is also helping Al Qaeda in Syria. At least Iran also backs the government.
I don’t believe anything our government says about the Middle East.
It may be the Iranians believe the Assad government is on the verge of collapse. If that happens and Syria is dominated by a Sunni regime it would create a national security nightmare for the mullahs. But Iran has played this game for a while. They've been shipping weapons and materiel to AQ in Afghanistan for years.
Maybe what you really mean, is that, like most of us, you pretty much don't believe anything the government says about anything.
Yeah? So is Obama.
McCain, Linda, JF'nK and 0bummer are too.
No big deal.....
Where the heck is the State Dept? CIA? Pentagon? etc.
What a cluster.....
I find that hard to believe, given that the AQ faction is funneling thousands of fighters and suicide bombers into Iraq to kill Shia Muslims.
I've got an idea. Why don't we just stick our nose in and back everybody? That way, we can't lose! And as there aren't any genuine good guys around there, our political "leaders" will feel righteous about whatever they do and how many billions of dollars and thousands of American lives they can throw at the mess!
It's a WIN-WIN...!
A stupid report.
Iran supports Assad in Syria, who is fighting Al Qaeda. Iranian troops are on the ground inside Syria fighting for Assad, against Al Qaeda.
Plus, Iranian-backed Hezbollah troops and funding are in Syria fighting Al Qaeda.
Good idea.
I lived in the middle east five years and KNOW that Americans and our government haven't CLUE ONE about the middle east. Never have. Never will.
My husband concluded after three months there that the middle easterners simply THINK differently about EVERYTHING than we do. They have TOTALLY different values and expectations about EVERYTHING.
My read: we have nothing in common with them but our vertebral column.
Never thought I’d trust the Iranians more than the US government....
The state dept. is lying. Why would the Iranians try to take down their own puppet regime? I can’t wait to see how Carney, Harf, or Psaki will answer this one.
Oh wait, they won’t be asked.
>>I lived in the middle east five years and KNOW that Americans and our government haven’t CLUE ONE about the middle east
Honestly, what the hell does the State Dept. take us for? We know about Al-Nusra, Hezbullah, etc. more than their own staff does. It’s obvious they’re lying to try to put more pressure on Iran, and Iran is just laughing at our ignorance.
Let the centrifuges keep spinning, Obama.
