World’s largest solar plant is open, but its mirrors scorch birds (Cal--f Mohve Desert )

The world’s largest solar plant is officially online in the Mojave desert — and it is causing some dismay.

That’s because the technology the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station uses could be a threat to wildlife — it generates heat so intense there’s growing evidence it is scorching birds, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Combine this with wind turbines and you get shredded and baked!

Gross negligence and mismanagement. If they had asked me, I would have told them about the birds.

Wanna bet the animal rights wackos are silent?

Wanna bet every damned last democrat shuts up about it?

Alternative energy is one of the big left-wing loves, along with whacko environmentalism. Now they can tell the endangered eagles and condors: If our windmills don’t slice you in half, our solar panels will fry you.

Between windmills and solar panels, birds will be met with ‘foul play.’

Using technology known as solar-thermal, nearly 350,000 computer-controlled mirrors roughly the size of a garage door reflect sunlight to boilers atop 459-foot towers. The sun’s power is used to heat water in the boilers’ tubes and make steam, which drives turbines to create electricity.

While many people are familiar with rooftop solar, or photovoltaic panels, “these are a little bit different. This takes the sun’s rays and reflects them onto towers,” said NRG spokesman Jeff Holland.

The plant can be a startling sight for drivers heading toward Las Vegas along busy Interstate 15. Amid miles of rock and scrub, its vast array of 7-by-10-foot mirrors creates the image of an ethereal lake shimmering atop the desert floor. In fact, it’s built on a dry lakebed.

I’m waiting for Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein to demand a low level fly-over so they can take credit. Someone should alert Obama, so he doesn’t lose out...

Heh heh heh...

Power generation according to Gaia:

Windfarms Solar Steam Hydroelectric Dams
  • Covers vast swaths of wilderness
  • Chops up birds
  • unreliable power, needs gas or diesel backup
  • very expensive
  • Covers vast swaths of wilderness
  • Flash roasts birds
  • No power in the dark, requires backup
  • very expensive
  • Covers vast swaths of wilderness
  • Kills fish
  • reliable 24 hr/day power
  • pays for itself
Good Good Bad, Bad, Bad...very Bad

The insides of a nuclear reactor would scorch birds too, but for the fact that they’re surrounded by about six inches of high-strength steel, and that is surrounded by two or three feet of reinforced concrete.

Indeed, it is a spectacular site, where not so long ago there was nothing. I drove by it yesterday. It's just south of Stateline, Nev., and about 10 miles north of Mountain Pass, Calif.
