Asians have taken over Hispanics as the largest wave of new immigrants to the United States, according to a report released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.
According to CNN, the report showed that in 2010, 36 percent of new immigrants to America were Asians, compared to 31 percent who were Hispanic. A decade ago, those numbers were 19 percent Asians and 59 percent Hispanics.
The numbers have pushed the population of individuals of Asian descent to a record 18.2 million, also making Asians the fastest-growing racial group in the country, according to The New York Times.
According to the study, Asian immigration has increased, but the gap widened more because of the sharp decline in Hispanic immigration.
Of illegal immigrants in the US, 11 percent are Asian while 75 percent are Hispanic, according to government data and the report's own polling, said Reuters.
Pew also suggested that more Mexicans, the largest group of immigrants currently in America, may be leaving the US than arriving, due to the poor job market, a rise in deportation and a decline in Mexico's birthrate, said The Washington Post.
The 18 million Asians in the US make up 6 percent of the country's population and more than eight out of ten come from China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan, said The Post. Hispanics in America number 52 million, or 17 percent of the population.
"A century ago, most Asian-Americans were low-skilled, low-wage laborers crowded into ethnic enclaves and targets of official discrimination," said the study, according to The Times. "Today they are the most likely of any major racial or ethnic group in America to live in mixed neighborhoods and to marry across racial lines."
The report comes at a time when immigration is once again at the forefront of the political landscape with President Barack Obama announcing that some children who were brought to America as illegal immigrants could be spared from deportation.
These Asian immigrants are much more likely to vote Republican than all those Hispanics and that will be good.
bring on the smart hard working immigrants!
Are they counting middle easterners too as “Asians” like Britain does?
the article says
“more than eight out of ten come from China, the Philippines, India, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan”
so I would assume not.
The Hispanics will have someone to work for. I would imagine Asians are more likely to stay here too.
Asians are not much more Republican than Hispanics.
Some Asians support gun control and Bloomberg’s and Pelosi’s police state that keeps them safe from black crime.
Especially when you include the whole continent. You got certain groups like Filipinos, Hmong and others that would be hardcore democrat. Schafly even had a poll that Koreans support Obamacare.
People assume all hardworking people will swing towards Republicans. White ethnics voted Democrat for 50 years well up until Nixon and Reagan. That was in a time of assimilation and lowered immigration between 1924 and 1972.
There are a MASSIVE number of visa overstayers who are Asian. By far the majority. 40% of all illegals overstayed a visa purposely. The media plays this WAY down, in order to make most people think those opposing amnesty are racist against Hispanics.
One assumes that this report deals only with legal immigrants subject to enumeration.
No. In British parlance these would be called East Asians hailing from east of India.
some are engineers and cancer researchers. Others are peasants. They all work hard, but one thing Chinese know is how to game the system. Its part of growing up in a collectivist, communist state. Our local Chinese grocery store owner lives in the back of his store works 14 hour days, while having his wife and kids collect welfare.
75 percent of illegal aliens are Hispanic. This is the group which will benefit disproportionately from Amnesty. The politicians who call pro-enforcement Americans racist are the real racists, pandering to one demographic with promises of Amnesty.
AMEN. I have worked with many Asian co-workers, and I can say that for the most part they are very hardworking, and intelligent. This is a great trend.
>> undocumented Hispanics
Their documents are in their country - where they should be. Reunite them with their documents by deporting them.
bingo, also Muslim pakistanis
>>>the article says

What about the rest “less than two”?
i see a lot of muslim pakistanis
No, it includes those from India as well - a significant proportion, in fact.
Historically, the US Census had put ‘East Indian’ as ‘Caucasian’ until it was changed to ‘Asian Indian’ in more recent times (70s?). So, many studies and surveys that categorise ‘Asian’ also included Subcontinental Indians.
