Police say Judy Lynn Hayman escaped from a Michigan prison in 1977
After more than 36 years on the run, a woman who police say escaped from a Michigan prison has been arrested in San Diego.
Woman Arrested 36 Years After Prison Escape: PD Judy Lynn Hayman escaped from a Michigan prison in 1977, and this week, police say they've found her living a double life in San Diego. NBC 7's Lauren Lee reports. Woman Arrested 36 Years After Prison Escape: PD Woman Arrested 36 Years After Prison... More Photos and Videos On April 14, 1977, Judy Lynn Hayman escaped from the Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Washtenaw County, Mich., south of Ann Arbor.
Then 23 years old, Hayman had been serving a minimum sentence of 16 months for attempted larceny, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website.
Since then, corrections officials had not given up their hunt for her, and this year, their search led them to San Diego.
San Diego Police officials said they got a call from Michigan corrections, telling them the address and description of a person they believed to be Hayman.
When police contacted her, officers said she identified herself as Jamie Lewis and had documents supporting her claim.
However, further investigation revealed that the woman was indeed Hayman, SDPD said.
The now 60-year-old fugitive was arrested Monday around 3:15 p.m. at 3501 1st Street and taken to the Las Colinas jail, where she faces extradition to Michigan.
An SDPD officer said she admitted to being Hayman.
The suspect's son, Aaron, told NBC 7 he is surprised and worried for his mom, though he did not confirm or deny if he knew that she was leading a double life. He is one of three sons.
Aaron said his mother lived a life outside her home in Hillcrest, going to PTA meeting and church.
A neighbor who lived next door to Hayman described her as a quiet person who seemed paranoid and kept to herself. They would talk about both being cancer survivors.
The corrections website shows that Hayman has gone by other aliases, including Brenda Bushmer, Judy Kayman and more.
I agree with you, but I think after 36 years “attempted shoplifting” should probably have been minor enough to get her off a database. I guess government really throws nothing but liberty away.
"You mean to tell me there a person living in San Diego illegally with fake documents? No way Jose!"
Will be the best thing that ever happened to her, after she sells her story rights for a Lifetime Movie of the Week.
While at the same time, in a parallel universe, the statute of limitations for raping a child expired in the Woody Allen case...
If the statute of limitations applies, it has probably run out on that crime too.
Heck, I thought this was the next chapter of the Kathleen Soliah story.
There should be no punishment for escape, except for the jailers and guards.
:p
Escaping from prison is a punishable crime, and should be. I was just trying to figure out how this might play out in court.
I’ll rest easy tonight that, if I try to steal something from another FReeper, I’ll get a mulligan.
It was ATTEMPTED larceny even
She probably went through one of those routine saliva/blood test checkpoints.
A very large number of our politicians, local, state, and national are crooks who should be in jail and we are worried about chasing this lady.
lol
“Attempted larceny...36 years ago?” More government vanity and waste.
Seriously, if you wish to change public policy, let's get our legislatures on it.
Fat chance. Angela Davis, the avowed communist, can often be seen in her $70,000 BMW coming out of her gated community near Santa Cruz where she has lifetime tenure at UCSC. Like the community organizer come president she will never be accountable for her crimes because of her skin color.
But that didn’t mention ‘for larceny’ did it.
With a crime such as this, after a certain amount of time, leave it alone. She would’ve surfaced long ago if she were living a criminal life. It seems she self-rehabilitated, and rehabilitation is supposed to be the purpose of jail time.
Statute of limitations refers to them bring chargers after a period of time. In this case she was convicted, sentenced and escaped. She still owes the time.
Not to worry once they waste the money bring her back home they will kick her loose.
