I worked for a company in Nashville that was just acquired by new management out of Denver. They laughed when we started closing early because of the potential of snow.
They weren’t laughing the next morning. They thought they could drive in snow. Add a bunch of hills and a layer of ice, and they figured out they weren’t as smart as they thought they were.
Black ice is a killer. In places like Atlanta, they are prepared for snow but not Black Ice....no one is.
That’s because it doesn’t fit the Left’s narrative. They want people to suffer. DIE, YOU RIGHT-WING NUTJOBS, DIE!
How unusual. Snow falling on roads and then forming ice. Geez.
Hey Atlanta, salt the damn road.
Exactly, I got the same snowstorm as Atlanta and no one can drive normally on roads that have been snowed on, the snow melted and then refrozen into a sheet of smooth, slick ice. And if that happens in a large city, you get what we saw in Atlanta.
The problem this week was that the snows started in the morning after most people had gone to work, or gone to school, or wherever. And then the streets and roads were dangerous in the afternoon when folks needed to head home, either early or at their normal time. - Of anyone had had a good weather crystal ball, everyone would have stated at home the morning the snow came.
Our snows usually come at night and melt away before noon, but this one came in the morning and stayed for two full days, and it is unusual for snow to stick around that long in most of the South.
This storm was a bit different. I drove through Charlotte at 1900hrs and the brine treatment actually made the situation worse. The initial snow melted and then refroze quickly. I-85 along with 77 was an ice rink but we didn’t get the rush hour mess Atlanta dealt with.
I made it home @30mph in triple the time. Folks were using the inside lanes and not trying to rush. I was proud of my fellow travelers on 85N.
85S was a parking lot. LOL.
Here is what I posted on another thread...
It was interesting to me to see the difference between
republican and democrat in their response to
snowmagedden, the governor (Deal) and his Ga. Fema
head both were on the air apologizing and accepting
responsibiliy for the mistakes made...
Mayor Reed (D.Atlanta) basically said it wasnt
any of him, so he didnt apologize but cast aspersions
on others.
Seemed to me plain how the differnet partys deal with
adversity.
I also heard a lot of stories of good Samaritans.
In one instance, the cooks and help at a Waffle house
could not make it to work, so various customers took
over taking orders, busing tables, doing dishes
and even some of the cooking.
This is the kind of self reliance that has always been
the trademark of Americans. while it would have been
nice for government to have been better prepared,
the people must stand on their own, it is what made
America possible and the country it was and still is
today despite all Obama and the demorats do to destroy
it.
That is indeed a problem and one in which I was involved in two weeks ago. It took me an hour and a half to drive 44 miles along I-696 here in S.E. Michigan simply because the Oakland County road commission wasn't out salting the freeway......totally their fault!
As soon as I hit the Macomb County line, the trucks had already been out and the ice was melting........
I'm giving Atlanta the benefit of the doubt since they're not familiar with how to deal with these extreme weather conditions and they probably didn't have the resources in terms of trucks and salt to deal with it......
As far as blaming it on the drivers, well, the worst highway conditions will bring out the worst results in even the best drivers.......there's not a damn thing they can do about it.
Hate to sound nasty but ... so what?
This is why you call your DOT out to pretreat surfaces. The fact that you weren't prepared for basic preventative road maintenance is the issue. There is nothing unusual about any of the occurrences cited in this article, and yes, if you understood how to "handle a little snow" this would have been done.
For crying out loud, can’t these people find a way to take care of themselves without relying on gubment?
Last year DC when through a similar situation; it started raining and freezing on the roads. The problem was the fuel efficient cars which are too light and have no traction. It only took two or three getting stuck and sliding all over to back up the traffic. Once a few is stuck the rest, as they say, is history. Heavier SUVs that can handle the road conditions are worthless. Instead, people were stranded for 8-10 hours in rush hour. Fortunately, I had left early when it was raining.
While driving in ice IS a problem, you'll never hear mention from the media 1) the problem of driving these light weight cars in adverse conditions, and 2) what happens in an accident in one of these cars.
I have traveled thru Atlanta many times including just BEFORE the snow and ice. Atlanta has a lot of hills and a lot of long grades on the Interstate highways. It is not very easy to negotiate on ice.
God Bless all the drivers and Police and Highway workers. Stay safe.
Singing “Ice, Baby, Ice”.
Ain’t that Global Warming great? You get to iceskate in the South just like the poor folks in the North. Now that is “weather equality”.
Just imagine. Frozen orange juice, right from the tree.
Gives new meaning to “Cold enough to freeze your coconuts off”.
I’m going into the fur-lined bikini business. Love it when a cold front hits a warm front.
Thanks for setting some clarity to the problems in Atlanta.
I have driven on a Midwest highway in the middle of winter in a blinding snow storm. It was freaky but I managed. Had the pavement been turning to ice, it would have been a different story.

Not to hijack the thread, but that's cool. BTT
Gonna be 80 tomorrow. Aggh.
