News: The real story you're not hearing about the Atlanta Ice Down
CainTV.com ^ | January 30, 2014 | Herman Cain

Bad storm. Terrific people.

The whole country is talking about the Atlanta Ice Down, and I know you've all heard the stories of people being stuck in traffic for 11 hours. The way the story is being told, it must sound like those of us in the Southeast have no idea what to do when a few snowflakes start coming down.

But the main national stories didn’t tell the whole story about what happened.

The problem was not that two or three inches of snow fell. Believe it or not, southerners can handle driving in two or three inches of snow. The problem was that, as the snow fell, it was melting upon hitting the ground and then freezing. Throughout the day, that was turning road surfaces into ice rinks.

Here is what I posted on another thread...

It was interesting to me to see the difference between
republican and democrat in their response to
snowmagedden, the governor (Deal) and his Ga. Fema
head both were on the air apologizing and accepting
responsibiliy for the mistakes made...

Mayor Reed (D.Atlanta) basically said it wasn’t
any of him, so he didn’t apologize but cast aspersions
on others.

Seemed to me plain how the differnet partys deal with
adversity.

I also heard a lot of stories of good Samaritans.
In one instance, the cooks and help at a Waffle house
could not make it to work, so various customers took
over taking orders, busing tables, doing dishes
and even some of the cooking.

This is the kind of self reliance that has always been
the trademark of Americans. while it would have been
nice for government to have been better prepared,
the people must stand on their own, it is what made
America possible and the country it was and still is
today despite all Obama and the demorats do to destroy
it.

“Black ice is a killer.”

Yup, black stuff is a killer...especially black ice. Much more racist than white ice...

I lived in Ireland for several years...’78 - ‘81 ... black ice was ‘invented’ there, and algore had nothing to do with it...none of this internet $hit. Black ice is insipid, and no warning...until you loose it...not so bad though when alone on an Irish road with no other traffic...gets the heart pounding though...especially in the mountains where it’s 100 feet or more down a mountain side if you loose it!

But the Gov is a Republican...and Atlanta is where the “state government” resides. Can’t blame this one in a party. “They” all screwed this one up.

And of course liquid deicer can be applied by any applicator equipped tanker. Standard Sodium Chloride can be turned into brine with even improvised set ups, I`ve seen it done using large animal watering troughs and some PVC fittings, piping, and pumps. You need to fire your city and state highway managers.

That is indeed a problem and one in which I was involved in two weeks ago. It took me an hour and a half to drive 44 miles along I-696 here in S.E. Michigan simply because the Oakland County road commission wasn't out salting the freeway......totally their fault!

As soon as I hit the Macomb County line, the trucks had already been out and the ice was melting........

I'm giving Atlanta the benefit of the doubt since they're not familiar with how to deal with these extreme weather conditions and they probably didn't have the resources in terms of trucks and salt to deal with it......

As far as blaming it on the drivers, well, the worst highway conditions will bring out the worst results in even the best drivers.......there's not a damn thing they can do about it.

Hate to sound nasty but ... so what?

This is why you call your DOT out to pretreat surfaces. The fact that you weren't prepared for basic preventative road maintenance is the issue. There is nothing unusual about any of the occurrences cited in this article, and yes, if you understood how to "handle a little snow" this would have been done.

Exactly, I got the same snowstorm as Atlanta and no one can drive normally on roads that have been snowed on, the snow melted and then refrozen into a sheet of smooth, slick ice. And if that happens in a large city, you get what we saw in Atlanta.

Absolutely not. if it snows in a large city that treats their roads, you don't get what you saw in Atlanta.

I remember here in Dallas it happened several years ago, took me six hours to drive home in a normal half-hour commute.

In some of the more “sensitive” parts of the country it’s called “clear ice.” Although that may be offensive to Scientologists...

Not so sure Arlanta is prepared for snow OR ice...heard they only have 9 snowplows? But why have them sitting in a truck yard for 20 years to wait for the next snowstorm? Answer here is not plows(etc) but taking precautions when the weather is threatening...staggering leaving times and keeping the kids out of the school busses is the answer, they’ll get ripped for erring on the side if caution, but better than this!

I grew up in ice storm country and I know how bad they are. We hardly ever get them in Denver and people here don’t know how to deal with them.

“I live in Minnesota, and we always have problems the first snowfall of the year.”

Ah, but in Atlanta (and much of Tennessee) the first snowfall of the year may be their only snowfall of the year. In that context they cope equal or better than you might. And no where in Minnesota will you find the kind of traffic you find in Atlanta. Even on a warm sunny day at noon, when traffic would be expected to be light, it likely would shiver your timbers!
