Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) said Tuesday night that he left President Obama's State of the Union speech early after "hearing how the President is further abusing his Constitutional powers."
"I could not bear to watch as he continued to cross the clearly-defined boundaries of the Constitutional separation of powers," Stockman said in a release shortly after Obama's speech ended. "Needless to say, I am deeply disappointed in the tone and content of tonight's address."
Stockman said he was reacting to Obama's promise to "break his oath of office and begin enacting his own brand of law through executive decree."
"This is a wholesale violation of his oath of office and a disqualifying offense," said the Texas congressman.
Stockman also criticized Obama for refusing to admit "his policies have failed," and for advancing a plan for more taxes and spending that is a "blueprint for perpetual poverty."
The Tea Party-backed congressman had missed weeks of House votes and hadn't been campaigning in Texas for his race against Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). After tweeting that people could "find out Monday" where he'd been, Stockman resurfaced this Monday to say he'd been on a House-sanctioned international trip and blasting reports saying had been missing.
Other Republican members had similar reactions to Obama's promise to do by executive order what he can't get done legislatively in Congress.
"Unfortunately, what I heard from President Obama tonight was hostility toward our foundational principles, condescension toward a co-equal branch of government, and a general aversion to common sense and bipartisanship," said Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho).
"The President's attempt to intimidate Congress by abusing executive power demonstrates a serious unwillingness to work with the coequal legislative branch of government," said Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.).
How can you tell who the people are in congress who are only pretending to be for small government and against this current power grab? That’s easy. They are the ones who didn’t walk out on that speech last night. So we have, what...one guy? The rest of them are playing you all for fools. I’m serious, if paul, cruz, lee and the rest didn’t walk out during the speech where obama more or less declared himself emperor, its because they don’t have that much of a problem with it.
Good for him. Would have been better, in my opinion, if he never went, but at least he walked out. That was more than most Republicans did.
Had he not attended, he would not get the interviews.
He is getting the attention but not the bad press of saying “you lie”
I say well done!
I agree with well done.
Someone should put it in terms of rape.
When Barky says “I want to work with Congress, but if they won’t cooperate, I’ll go around them”,
it’s the equivalent of saying “I’d like you to have consensual sex with me, but if you won’t consent, I’m going to do it anyway.”
For Obama to do these trips that disrupt public services when they’re all totally overwhelmed because of the weather is incomprehensible and narcisstic.
Incomprehensible and narcisstic is as incomprehensible and narcisstic does...
Time to skip impeachment and invoke the 25th ammendment. The guy is clearly unfit for office.
With all due respect, if you’re going to represent Congressman Stockman, please learn how to use “Spell Check”.
Sounds kinda lame but - I stand with Stockman!

I guess that’s o.k. I don’t know if he’s your Congressman, but, he’s mine for the second time. I’m not voting for him. I’m voting for Linda Vega. If he is in a run-off with Cornyn, he will lose. He has entirely too much baggage. But, I’d vote for a one-eyed crack whore before I vote for Cornyn, but, Steve will have a hard time winning the run-off.
I’ve stated many times on here, that I am not a Stockman supporter. However, if he can get a lot of publicity out of this, it will help him, here in Texas, in his run for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat presently held by John Cornyn. Someone needs to exploit this action on his part. It will help him.
My home state is Washington, but I do live in Stockman’s district, IN Texas; in the city very close to the George Hartman Bridge. It’s the city whose motto is “Where water and oil really do mix.”
And exactly where in my FR profile do I claim to currently live in the State of Washington?
I'm ok with this option. After all, it is time tested and proven to work.
Good morning. No. he is not my congressman. I was simply supporting his symbolic gesture of standing up, and walking out of the State of the Union propaganda. Frankly, in my judgement, all of congress, or those who support the constitution should have walked out!
You have identified yourself with FR as living in WA state (note the WA State flag on your profile.)
Maybe you have moved recently to TX without updating your FR profile location. If so, I appologize.
Otherwise, pardon me if I accuse you of being a liberal Seattle troll. Your FR handle sort of gives you away too. ;)
You would be the first person to EVER think of me as being a liberal; I’m very much the polar opposite of a liberal.
