Wisconsin should develop its own academic benchmarks by re-examining the Common Core Academic Standards already adopted by Wisconsin and many other states, Gov. Scott Walker said at an education conference Friday.
In a speech at the State Education Convention in Milwaukee, Walker said he is working on legislation that would create a commission, chaired by Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers, to revisit the Common Core standards, which he said weren't high enough and were being dictated by people who weren't from Wisconsin.
"We embrace high standards in the state of Wisconsin," Walker said. "There's got to be a way for us to put our fingerprints on it.
"The standards we have in the state should be driven by people in Wisconsin," Walker said.
Walker weighed in on the politically charged issue of adopting the national standards, which some tea party conservatives in the state have characterized as a federal takeover of education. Backers of the standards say that's a myth.
Common Core standards for what students should be able to do in reading and math have been adopted by 45 states, with supporters believing uniform K-12 guidelines will translate to higher student achievement. The standards also are aligned with new online state achievement tests coming down the pike.
Wisconsin was one of the first states to get on board, adopting the standards with little fanfare several years ago.
Since the Common Core's introduction, though, several states have pushed back by either halting implementation or withdrawing from national testing. Just this week, New York's Senate threatened to introduce legislation to delay the standards' adoption.
Evers said Friday that, based on his own conversation with Walker a day earlier, the Common Core standards could continue being implemented as they exist now.
"It's my belief we're not abandoning the Common Core..."

I certainly hope that Tony Evers is wrong on this and that Scott Walker definitely intends to abandon Common Core.
Cards and Letters to Walker, please.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
I hope they dump it faster than NY got rid of Weiner.
So do we. Unfortunately Common Core was adopted under a previous Dem governor who took a lot of Fed money, and it has to be paid back if we drop it. The text book problem remains because (as I understand it) Common Core principles have permeated ALL texts and tests used in the USA.
There are two state that did not accept Common Core. VA was one of them.
‘Has to be paid back if we drop it” - I knew there was stink-money involved in CC, but did not know this part. Thanks for clarifying. Good for Walker/ full speed ahead.
Why the NSA?
One of the interesting aspects of KhanAcademy.org is that when Salman Khan was asked if his instructional videos were a replacement for schools, he replied that he did not think so - but that the were a possible replacement for textbooks.KhanAcademy is tooling up to support Common Core, and it is possible that the answer to the question, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? will ultimately be No on that account. But its like the atom bomb - ultimately the secret was not how it worked but that it worked - once the nations knew that it worked, inevitably they would figure out how.Having the example of the KhanAcademy, there is really no difficulty in making WisconsinAcademy.org. Khans budget is pocket change for Wisconsin - especially if it chose to cooperate with other CommonCore-skeptical states to produce a more open educational model. In the limiting case, the drive would be to enable teachers and school boards to create their own versions of the YouTube academy.
And the textbook industry will be toast.
Good! A GLIMMER of hope! Figures it was tied to big cash payouts under Doyle! Grrrrrr!
I was having my usual, ‘2am wake up to think about work’ and I was also thinking - I’m really looking forward to the day when we have a US Repbulican Senate!
And then I went back to dreaming, LOL!
common crap like crapcare is a cancer any progressive liberal marxist would love
I think the money came as part of the Race to the Top program. Wisconsin was the first state to sign on to that program (under a Dem Governor and legislature). As a reward, they got to opt out of No Child Left Behind, and money came with it.
Apparently, our State Constitution puts education in the hands of local school boards. It is illegal for the State Superintendant to have signed us up for Federal control. But, the local School Boards seem confused on this point.
Evers heading the commission. He has already said we are getting Common Core, and that’s it!
I’ve spent the last 2 weeks in California handling my 100 year old mother’s estate. While dining at Denny’s one afternoon, I observed a foursome — grandmother and grandfather, a daughter, and a 9 year old boy — pouring over a texbook and work sheet. They seemed like intelligent folks, but they couldn’t solve the problems. Grandpa lifted the cover of the book so that I could read it: “California Math”!
That name offends me to the core, even though I was born and raised in California. There is such thing as “California Math!”
Anyhow, I heard the grandfather say, “Estimate? hat’s all this estimating for? In the first place, (reading from the book) you can’t ‘round-up’ 420 to 450! It’s just not right!”
He (Evers) needs to be exposed as a law breaker and his feet held to the fire.
Common Core Information Links Prominent Catholic scholars --- 132 of them at last count ---co-signed a letter which was delivered to every bishop in the United States, expressing grave concern about Common Core as a threat the Catholic identity of parochial schools, and the Judeo-Christian values which are at the root of Western Civilizations culture and heritage:

TN agreed to accept Common Core Standards in January 2010 before they even had a draft (March 2010), let alone the Final version (June 2010). Here is Common Core Public License -notice protected by copyright. These cannot be altered in any way

Attachment Above- TNFirst to the Top Executive Summary. Notice that the Standards mentioned are Common Core Standards. This Law was signed on January 18, 2010. The Common Core Standards did not come out for approval until June 2010. How did our State Legislature know what they were in January 2010?? How did the State Board of Education know what they were? In addition at the top of page 3, it talks about our State Longitudinal Data System and other areas it can pull from. What will stop them from incorporating more data points, collecting more personal and family information about students and their families, without their parents knowledge or consent?

There are plenty of secular reasons why Common Core standards reflect, not deeper learning and state of the art learning strategies as they claim, but muddled, experimental methodologies, and goals hovering dubiously at the lowest common denominator.

WHOS BEHIND COMMON CORE:
It is important to know that here in Tennessee, the TN DEPT OF EDUCATION received 3.6 million dollars from Gates, SCORE- Bill Frist/ Jamie Woodson Organization received 1.8 million dollars, and the Fordham Institute was given 6.7 million from Gates and asked to grade Common Core. National PTA received 1 million dollars and Chamber of Commerce has received from Gates to promote Common Core. It is hard to stay objective when you are getting money to promote. Remember Gates spent millions to create Common Core w/ Feds, Partner w/ Pearson who own the Educational Textbooks, and gave 30 million dollars to David Coleman to align SAT w/ Common Core Standards. I included a few articles below.

2 SHORT VIDEOS by the architects and planners of Common Core:
David Coleman, president of the College Board and creator of the Common Core State Standards, talks to data analysts in a conference in Boston on May 31, 2013. Coleman wrote Common Core Standards and is now at SAT aligning the College Admissions Testing.

Linda Darling Hammond (who was Obama's first choice for Education Secretary and an associate of William Ayers, now acclaimed education expert, formerly Weather Underground terrorist bomber. Hamond was very influential in Common Core Standards and is in charge of one of the 2 National Tests. She is at Smarter Balance, where TN choose to go with the PARCC Tests. This video will show you the mindset of the push for standards.
Apparently Listecki in Milwaukee didn't understand the letter, since he won't allow the anti-CommonCore advocates to speak on church property.
I heard of that. Disgraceful.
