Oliver Stone announced on Friday he is no longer involved with an upcoming movie about the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after the studio rejected his script.
"Sad news. My MLK project involvement has ended. I did an extensive rewrite of the script, but the producers won't go with it," the director wrote on Twitter.
"The script dealt w/ issues of adultery, conflicts within the movement, and King's spiritual transformation into a higher, more radical being," Stone continued. "I'm told the estate & the 'respectable' black community that guard King's reputation won't approve it. They suffocate the man & the truth. I wish you could see the film I would've made. I fear if 'they' ever make it, it'll be just another commemoration of the March on Washington. Martin, I grieve for you. You are still a great inspiration for your fellow Americans--but, thank God, not a saint."

“they are finally suffering death at the hands of non-Blacks who have had enough,”
You know, they had their chances over decades ago. Nine white males passed in favor of school integration and white politicians forced integration so frankly I don’t think these blacks had any right to grievance for a long long time. I’m tired of it; we can’t win and I honestly see the black community spiraling out of control. Not just riots, but something else is eating away at their minds; it’s like they’re lashing out more and more and more and seem determined to take the rest of this nation down with them.
Not only that but
Reagan wasn’t a minister, like king.
Can’t have the truth come out, oh no. None of that.
Great analysis. Thanks for posting.
When I was in grad school, I had a vet student tell me his dad was an FBI agent assigned to protect MLK in Dallas during some march back in the 60s. He caught MLK and some number of his entourage having an orgy in MLK’s hotel suite. He stated the entire room was full of naked Africans. We have seen similar pictures in national geographic. Go figure.
I have to ponder, which Affie preacher will be the next in line to have a national holiday declared in his honor? Sharpton, Jackson, or Wright?
"We, Negro Americans, sing with all loyal Americans: My country 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, Land of the Pilgrims' pride From every mountainside Let freedom ring! That's exactly what we mean from every mountainside, let freedom ring. Not only from the Green Mountains and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire; not only from the Catskills of New York; but from the Ozarks in Arkansas, from the Stone Mountain in Georgia, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Let it ring not only for the minorities of the United States, but for the disinherited of all the earth! May the Republican Party, under God, from every mountainside, LET FREEDOM RING!"

Pretty much the same strictures apply to the way MLK is discussed and portrayed in the media here as applied to portrayals of Lenin and other "heroes of the revolution" in the Soviet Union.
I think the family wants some epic journey of a movie....with only pure thoughts of the guy, and a likely oscar-status for the movie and actor. Naturally, money would come out of such results.
The problem is...the deeper that you dig into the character....you have a man who is deep into the thought of where things are going. He’s not pure and clean. He has a message which generally stays the same from day one on. The minute you hint of some affectionate “other gal” in the story....things go downhill with the image.
The odds of any movie made in the next decade? Zero chance. Maybe when all of the current children are gone, and the next generation are the decision-makers....it’ll change. Eventually, the foundation will come into some battle situation where decisions are made because of serious cash flow problems.
Being an urban Southerner, I have always been amused to find people are shocked when an urban minister is discovered to be adulterous.
We are shocked when they are NOT adulterous. It’s an open secret that successful urban pastors like to “get busy”, sometimes with women, sometimes with men. Show me a successful charismatic urban reverend and I’ll show you a man that likes to get a little, every now and again.
Jimmy Swaggart, please pick up the courtesy phone.
I'm wondering the same thing. Is there evidence of MLK adultery or is this just wishful thinking by hollywood. I'm surprised they didn't try to make him gay.

I know its fashionable to love MLK and blabber on and on about white guilt like it is sophisticated and all, but in honest truth George Washington means more to me than MLK. MLK day has an expiration date that is soon coming up, it had great partisan use that is coming to an end. Washington will still be in the history books front and center MLK will be in the bargain rack.
LOL!!
Anecdotal examples of one or two is insufficient evidence to condemn the entire lot, imho. Were you a victim?
I guess you missed all of them. How many would be enough for you? Or is this just one of those examples of “I don’t want to see it therefore it doesn’t exist”.
So, are you one of them too? My take is, without exception, there are good and bad people in every profession. If I were to condemn a profession, it would be lawyers. Ask what profession has put this country in such a mess?
Yikes. Now is the insane liberal conspircy theorist loon Oliver Stone has written a MLK Jr. biopic that actually sounds pretty historically accurate and compelling (at least on paper). I never thought I'd agree with Oliver Stone's version of history. I'm not sure what's more jarring -- this or Vladmir Putin standing up for western civilization against Obama.
Looks like Stone will have to pursue another avenue.
It seems to me that he might have had a dream that blacks could legally apply for any job they wanted with a fair chance of getting it based on qualifications. I think he'd be pretty disappointed at the direction his dream has taken.
Not quite sure. I did think at the time that his thinking was indeed closer to that of Booker Washinton and A.Phillip Randolph, which was to ensure that black men could obtain dignified employment and thus be able to earn equal status in American society. In other words, to be able to do what poor white Southerners were just then becoming able to do in the post-war period. I think it was LBJs aim to break segregation because the poverty that had gripped the South since the Civil War could now be set aside and indeed ought to because it caused whites to spend too much time worrying about dividing a small pot of money. Unlike Obama, for instance, LBJ did want to grow the economy and expected it to grow. The problem was he was too optimistic,
